Chapter 8 - The Sweet Vapor

The sweet, cloying scent filled the air within seconds, heavy and thick like old perfume mixed with industrial solvent. Julian felt a sudden, dizzying wave wash over him, his limbs growing instantly leaden as he clutched Lily tightly against his chest.
“Julian! Don't breathe!” Clara screamed, coughing violently as she pressed the hem of her silk robe over her nose and mouth.
“It’s a neuro-toxin... it’s making the air heavy...”
Julian tried to shout back, but his tongue felt thick and uncooperative. His knees buckled under the sudden weight of exhaustion, but sheer paternal instinct forced him to twist his body as he fell, ensuring Lily landed softly on his chest rather than the hard marble floor.
The red laser light danced across the ceiling, illuminating the swirling white vapor clouds descending from the automated vents. Through the haze, Julian saw the heavy brass doorknob slowly turn. A pair of polished leather shoes stepped into the dim amber light of the desk lamp.
Marcus walked in wearing his pristine beige three-piece suit, a gas mask dangling casually from one gloved hand. He strolled leisurely across the room, ignoring Clara as she collapsed against a bookshelf, gasping for air before losing consciousness.
Marcus stopped right beside Julian, looking down at the unconscious man and the trembling child. Lily was still breathing, though her eyes were fluttering shut, her small fingers stubbornly locked into the fabric of Julian’s black suit jacket.
“You really thought you could outsmart a twenty-year conspiracy with a stolen inhaler and a pocketful of righteous anger?” Marcus asked quietly, crouching down to pry Lily’s tiny fingers loose from Julian’s lapel.
Julian tried to lift his arm, but his muscles refused to obey. His vision blurred at the edges, tunneling down to a tiny point of light reflecting off Marcus’s silver cufflinks.
“Leave... her... alone,” Julian managed to whisper, his voice nothing more than a raspy exhalation.
Marcus chuckled softly, effortlessly pulling the child away from Julian’s weakening grip and lifting her into his arms.
“She’s the prototype, Julian. She belongs to the corporation now. But as for you and Clara... Arthur decided it’s time for another tragic accident to hit the family headlines.”
Marcus turned his head toward the shadowy corner of the library where old Arthur Vance sat quietly in his wheelchair, watching the scene with cold, detached indifference.
“Prepare the transport to the offshore facility,” Arthur instructed calmly, adjusting his oxygen tubes.
