Chapter 3 - Forgotten Bloodline

The silence in the grand marble corridor grew heavy, broken only by the faint chime of a distant grandfather clock marking the hour. Julian stood frozen, the harsh fluorescent glare of the crystal chandeliers reflecting off the polished floor. He stared at Marcus, the man’s words hanging in the air like a physical blow.
“What did you just say?” Julian asked, his voice dropping to a dangerous, low rumble.
“What last name?”
Marcus didn’t flinch. He reached into the inner pocket of his beige three-piece suit, his movements slow and deliberate, and pulled out a small, yellowed manila folder. He didn’t open it; instead, he tapped the corner against his palm.
“Children don't wander into secure wings by genetic coincidence, Julian,” Marcus replied calmly.
“Look at her eyes. Look at the way she holds her breath when she’s scared. That isn't just asthma. That’s the Vance family respiratory anomaly. The exact same condition that put your older brother in a grave twenty years ago.”
Clara gasped, clapping her hands over her mouth again, her eyes wide with shock.
“That’s impossible. Julian’s brother died unmarried and childless. The medical records were sealed by the supreme court.”
“Sealed records can be unsealed when the financial stakes are high enough,” Marcus retorted, his gaze shifting back to Lily.
“Meet Lily Vance. Your niece. The sole remaining heir to the entire corporate empire, and the primary reason your quarterly dividends have been quietly siphoned into medical research trusts for the past seven years.”
Julian dropped to one knee beside Lily again, ignoring the throbbing pain in his temples. He looked at the young girl, really looked at her, searching her face for familiar features he had spent decades trying to forget. The sharp jawline, the stubborn tilt of her chin, the exact shade of blonde hair his brother used to have.
“You knew,” Julian whispered, his voice cracking with restrained emotion.
“You knew she was here the entire time, Marcus.”
Lily looked up at Julian, her tear-filled eyes blinking slowly. She reached out with her small, cold hand and touched the lapel of his black suit jacket.
“My daddy told me you would come find me,” Lily whispered softly, her voice breaking his heart.
“He said my uncle Julian was the only one brave enough to open the door.”
Julian gently covered her small hand with his own large palm, a surge of protective fury eclipsing his shock. He looked up at Marcus, his expression hardening into absolute resolve.
“Open the door to the west wing, Marcus,” Julian ordered, standing up slowly.
