Chapter 13 - The Final Override

Marcus froze with his finger hovering over the trigger of the pistol, slowly turning his head toward the dark corner of the cargo hold. A heavy steel maintenance door, previously hidden behind a stack of industrial crates, slowly creaked open.

Stepping out from the shadows was Arthur Vance, seated in his motorized wheelchair, with two armed corporate guards flanking him. But the guards weren't holding their weapons at ready; their safety switches were clicked off, and their barrels were pointed directly at Marcus.

“Lower the weapon, Marcus,” Arthur Vance rasped, his voice cutting through the hum of the ship’s generators with cold, undeniable authority.

“The game is over.”

Marcus lowered the pistol slightly, staring at the patriarch in absolute disbelief.

“Chairman Vance? What are you doing? He’s uploading the entire archive to the public! If we don't stop him, the board will strip everything from us!”

“The board is already dissolved, Marcus,” Arthur replied smoothly, resting his thin hands on the armrests of his wheelchair.

“I called an emergency emergency-session via satellite link five minutes ago. You were outvoted unanimously. Every illegal asset, every offshore account, and every experimental facility has been signed over to a public oversight trust.”

Julian slammed his fist against the emergency release button next to the observation window. With a loud pneumatic hiss, the heavy steel blast shield slid upward, retracting into the ceiling. Julian rushed through the gap, immediately pulling Clara into his arms and checking her for injuries. She buried her face in his shoulder, trembling with adrenaline but unharmed.

“Why?” Marcus demanded, his voice cracking with desperation as he stepped back, realizing he had been completely abandoned by the man he served for decades.

“After everything we built to protect the family name?”

“The family name died the day my son passed away twenty years ago, Marcus,” Arthur said softly, his dark eyes shifting toward the doorway where Lily stood safely holding Clara’s hand, clutching her stuffed rabbit.

“I built an empire out of fear. Julian built a bridge out of courage. It’s time to let the sun back in.”

Marcus raised the pistol in a final, frantic burst of betrayal, aiming it directly at Arthur Vance’s wheelchair.

“Then nobody walks away from this ship!”

Before Marcus could pull the trigger, a sharp crack echoed through the hold. Marcus gasped, dropping the weapon as it clattered against the metal deck. He clutched his shoulder, stumbling backward as one of the guards stepped forward with a smoking service pistol.

Marcus collapsed to his knees, his pristine beige suit staining red, gasping for air just as Julian had gasped on the marble floor hours ago.

“Secure him,” Arthur ordered coldly, not even glancing at the fallen man as the ship finally ground to a halt against the steel pylons of the offshore rig.
