Chapter 12 - The Ultimatum

Through the small, thick glass observation window of the blast shield, Julian watched in frozen horror as Marcus held Clara against the bulkhead, the cold steel barrel of the pistol pressed firmly against her temple. Clara didn't struggle; she stared back through the glass with fierce, unyielding defiance, her lips moving silently as if urging him not to surrender.
“Drop the micro-drive, Julian,” Marcus’s voice filtered through the integrated intercom speaker, calm, cold, and dripping with absolute authority.
“Drop it on the floor right now, or the woman dies first, and the child follows right behind her.”
Julian looked down at his right hand. The brass micro-SD card rested in his palm, holding the entire truth of the Vance corporation’s decades-long conspiracy, the genetic override sequences, and Lily’s only ticket to a normal life. If he gave it to Marcus, they would all be silenced before the ship ever reached port. If he kept it, Clara would be executed in front of his eyes.
“Don't do it, Julian!” Clara’s muffled voice broke through the speaker just before Marcus roughly shoved the pistol harder against her head, silencing her.
Julian’s mind raced. He looked up at the ceiling vents, noticing that the intense heat from the incinerator purge had begun to stabilize, diverted by the override code Lily had entered into the system. The ship’s diesel engines beneath his feet gave a sudden, violent shudder, indicating they were slowing down as they approached the coordinates of the offshore rig.
“You’re too late, Marcus,” Julian spoke loudly into the control room mic, his voice steady and devoid of fear.
“The data has already mirrored to an external satellite relay. Even if you destroy this physical drive, the entire world will know what Arthur Vance did in the underground wing within thirty minutes.”
Marcus’s expression flickered with a micro-expression of genuine panic. He lowered the pistol from Clara’s head for a fraction of a second, his eyes darting toward the main communications console across the hold.
“You’re bluffing,” Marcus snarled, though his voice lacked its previous absolute certainty.
“The offshore rig is in a dead zone. There are no satellite uplinks within a hundred miles.”
“Check the auxiliary terminal behind you,” Julian challenged, leaning his forehead against the cold observation glass.
“Lily didn't just open her pod. She routed the entire mainframe through the emergency broadcast system while you were busy trying to burn us alive.”
Marcus spun around, rushing toward the master terminal. As he tapped furiously at the glowing blue keys, his face turned completely pale. The screen flashed a bright warning banner: TRANSMISSION TO GLOBAL MEDIA OUTLETS IN PROGRESS: 87% COMPLETE.
Marcus whirled back around toward the blast shield, his face twisted in desperate rage, raising the pistol directly at the observation window where Julian stood.
“I’ll kill you right now!” Marcus screamed over the intercom.

Before Marcus could pull the trigger, a small, quiet click echoed from the corner of the cargo hold behind him.
