Chapter 11 - The Incinerator Trap

The automated lights inside the massive cargo hold instantly shifted from a sterile white to an aggressive, pulsing crimson. A series of heavy mechanical locks engaged overhead with a deafening sequence of metallic thuds, sealing every exit and venting port in the room.

“Julian, the doors are locked from the bridge!” Clara shouted, running back to the heavy entry hatch and throwing her entire body against the steel. It didn't budge an inch.

From the ceiling above, a low, mechanical whirring sound began to build, accompanied by a rapid rise in ambient temperature. Through the heavy wire-mesh vents lining the upper walls, a faint orange glow flickered to life.

“They’re purging the hold!” Clara screamed, turning back to Julian with sheer terror in her eyes.

“They’re going to burn the entire room to the ground!”

Julian didn't panic. His dark eyes scanned the control console next to Lily’s containment cylinder. The biometric lock flashed a steady red light, demanding authorization codes he didn't possess. But then he remembered the micro-drive clenched tightly in his fist.

“Lily! Watch my hands!” Julian shouted over the rising roar of the combustion turbines spooling up above.

He lunged toward the console, jamming the brass micro-SD card into the auxiliary port. The screen flickered violently, flashing ERROR: UNAUTHORIZED OVERRIDE DETECTED.

“Come on, work,” Julian muttered under his breath, sweat beading on his forehead as the heat in the room became almost unbearable.

Inside the transparent bio-isolation cylinder, Lily pressed her face against the glass, her expression calm despite the chaos erupting around her. She didn't cry or scream; instead, she looked down at the control pad built into the outside of her glass pod and pressed a simple four-digit sequence with her small finger.

Beep. Beep. Beep. Click.

The red light on the main console abruptly turned solid green. The holographic display flashed: MASTER OVERRIDE ACCEPTED. WELCOME, DIRECTOR VANCE.

With a loud hiss of escaping pressure, Lily’s cylinder door swung open. At the same time, the emergency fire shutters on the main exit hatch retracted halfway, leaving a narrow, waist-high gap leading out onto the outer deck.

“Julian! The exit is open!” Clara yelled, grabbing Lily out of the glass pod and pulling her toward the gap.

Julian yanked the micro-drive from the port and turned to follow them, but before he could reach the door, a heavy steel blast shield slammed down from the ceiling, separating Julian from Clara and Lily with a deafening crash.

“Julian!” Clara screamed from the other side of the thick metal barrier, her voice muffled through the steel.

Julian slammed his fists against the cold metal plate, his chest burning from the intense heat.

“Get Lily out of here, Clara! Run to the communications array!”

On the other side of the blast shield, through a tiny reinforced observation window, Julian saw Marcus step out from the shadows, grabbing Clara by the arm and pointing a heavy pistol directly at her head.
