Chapter 6: The Letter From Miller

Two weeks into his return, an envelope bearing an Army postmark arrived in the mail. It was from Staff Sergeant Miller, his former squad leader who had lost his left leg during the same patrol that had earned Daniel his ribbon.
Daniel took the letter to the back porch.
*“Hey, Kid,”* the handwriting was shaky. *“Heard you made it back to Clara and the little one. I won't pretend the transition is easy. Half the guys from our unit are drinking themselves numb, pretending nothing happened. Don't be that guy, Dan. You fought like hell to get back to that front door. Don't build another bunker inside your own house.”*

The words burned through Daniel’s defenses. He folded the paper carefully and slid it into his wallet, right next to the worn photograph of Maya that had kept him breathing through the darkest nights in the desert.
