That evening, the family sat around the wooden dining table Daniel had built with his own hands over the summer. Plates of homemade pasta and fresh basil from their backyard garden filled the room with rich aromas.
Maya, now a chatterbox toddler, proudly used her fork to eat her dinner, making Clara laugh with every messy victory.
Daniel leaned back in his chair, taking in the scene. His heart beat steadily, grounded entirely in the present moment. The war would always be a chapter in his life, but it would never be the whole story.
He reached across the table and intertwined his fingers with Clara’s.
"What are you thinking about?" Clara asked with a soft smile.
