Chapter 11: The Art Room

Inside the footlocker in the garage, the old sketchbooks finally saw daylight. Daniel cleared out the spare bedroom, setting up an easel near the south-facing window.

He began to paint. He didn't paint landscapes or peaceful horizons; he painted raw, honest representations of his journey. Swirls of desert dust colliding with vibrant airport lights, dark silhouettes reaching toward outstretched toddler hands.

Art became his translator. When words failed to explain the grief of losing comrades or the shock of coming home, the canvas carried the load.

One weekend, Clara stepped into the studio, gazing at a large oil painting depicting Gate 4B—the moment Daniel had dropped to his knees in his OCP uniform, surrounded by the blurred motion of the crowd.
