Chapter 8: The Arrival of the Guests

The heavy oak doors of the Grandview Banquet Hall swung open, admitting the first wave of wedding guests into the brightly lit space. The ambient murmur of excited chatter, laughter, and the rustle of formal attire filled the room, banishing the heavy ghosts of the previous hour. Milli stood near the entrance, her veil pinned securely to her red hair, greeting friends and extended family with genuine warmth. Her aunt Sarah was among the first to arrive, sweeping Milli into a tight, affectionate hug that smelled faintly of lavender and old perfume. Sarah pulled back, looking at Milli with a mixture of admiration and concern, her sharp eyes noticing the lingering tension in the bride’s posture and the slight redness around her father’s eyes across the room.
"Everything looks stunning, sweetheart," Sarah said, scanning the soaring ceilings and floral arrangements before turning her gaze toward the head table. "And I see the seating arrangement got a much-needed upgrade. I heard a rumor that Elena made an early exit."

Milli offered a tight, knowing smile, squeezing her aunt’s hand. "Let's just say we cleared out some unnecessary clutter before the main event. Tonight is about family."
Across the room, Arthur stood by the bar, accepting a club soda from the bartender and nodding politely to arriving guests. He looked much more grounded now that the source of the family friction had been removed, though a nervous energy still lingered in his movements. He caught Milli’s eye across the crowded room and offered a small, tentative smile of reassurance. Milli nodded back, feeling a profound sense of pride wash over her. She had held her ground, refused to be sidelined at her own wedding, and forced her father to choose her over a toxic relationship. The guests began finding their seats, the murmur of conversation rising to a cheerful crescendo as the string quartet stationed in the corner began to play a soft, classical prelude. The drama of the afternoon felt like a distant storm, clouds parting to reveal a clear horizon. Yet Milli knew that the deeper conversations with her father still lay ahead, waiting for the dust of the wedding day to settle completely.
