Chapter 5: The Hesitant Father

Arthur rose slowly from his chair, the black fabric of his tuxedo pulling tight across his broad shoulders. He stood a full head taller than Milli, but in that moment, he looked remarkably small, trapped between the wife he had chosen and the daughter he had neglected. The banquet hall seemed to close in around them, the bright lights casting harsh shadows beneath their eyes. Elena remained seated, her fingers nervously tracing the rim of her water glass, her earlier confidence visibly eroding as she realized Arthur was actually considering the ultimatum. For months, Arthur had walked a tightrope, trying to balance his new relationship with the unresolved trauma of Rosalie’s death. He had allowed Elena too much influence, hoping to avoid conflict, but his passivity had brought them to this catastrophic precipice. He looked at Milli’s face—so strikingly similar to Rosalie’s, especially when she was angry—and the memories rushed back, overwhelming his defenses.

"Milli, please," Arthur began, his voice cracking slightly before he cleared his throat to regain his composure. "You don't understand the complexities of what we’ve built. Elena has been a stabilizing force for me when things fell apart."

"She is not stabilizing anything, dad; she is destroying what is left of us," Milli interrupted, her tone devoid of mercy. "You have two minutes to decide. My guests are arriving soon, and I refuse to walk down the aisle to a sham."

Arthur looked back and forth between the two women, the weight of the decision crushing him. He knew that if he asked Elena to leave, his relationship with her would likely be over. But if he let Milli walk out, he would lose his only daughter forever, sealing his fate as a lonely old man surrounded by empty rooms and bitter memories. Elena looked up at him, her eyes pleading for loyalty, but Arthur saw the cold calculation behind her gaze for the very first time. He realized that Elena had engineered this seating crisis as a power play to force his hand, testing whether he loved her enough to alienate his own child. The realization tasted like ash in his mouth. He drew a deep breath, his shoulders sagging as the burden of his mistakes finally settled upon him. He reached out a trembling hand toward Elena, not to comfort her, but to signal the end of the game.
