Chapter 4: The Ultimatum

The silence that followed Milli’s outburst was deafening. The acoustic perfection of the hall amplified every sound—the faint hum of the overhead ventilation, the distant chime of an elevator bell, and the heavy, synchronized breathing of the three people standing around the table. Arthur placed his wine glass down with deliberate slowness, the crystal tapping against the wood with a sharp ring. He looked at Elena, sharing a brief, silent communication that excluded Milli entirely. That shared look infuriated the bride more than any words could have. It was a reminder that they operated as a unit, a closed system that viewed her as an outsider intruding upon their dynamic. Milli stood tall, her white lace train pooling around her feet like fallen snow, her posture unyielding. She had compromised on the guest list, the menu, and the flowers to keep the peace leading up to the wedding, but she drew the absolute line here. She would not stand at the altar knowing her family had been marginalized to accommodate Elena’s insecurity and her father’s guilt.

"Then she leaves, or the bride does. Choose," Milli said, her voice dropping to a dangerous, unwavering whisper.

The ultimatum landed like a physical blow. Arthur’s face drained of color, his eyes widening in genuine shock. He had expected Milli to complain, perhaps even cry or storm off for a few minutes before backing down, as she had done so many times in the past. He had not anticipated this level of absolute resolve. Elena gasped softly, her hand flying to her chest in an exaggerated gesture of offense, though her eyes darted anxiously toward Arthur, waiting to see how the patriarch would handle the challenge. Milli did not blink. She held her ground, her gaze locked onto her father’s face, forcing him to make a choice that would define the rest of their lives. There was no room for compromise anymore. Either Arthur recognized his daughter and her family on her wedding day, or he chose the woman who had manipulated her way into his life at the expense of their familial bond. The next few seconds would determine whether this wedding would proceed or collapse entirely under the weight of long-suppressed resentments.
