Chapter 10: The Reception and the Toast

The reception was a whirlwind of clinking glasses, laughter, and the rich aromas of a gourmet feast. The head table hummed with lively conversation, Arthur sitting comfortably between Sarah and David, engaged in genuine dialogue for the first time in years. Milli sat beside James, stealing glances at her father and feeling a quiet triumph settling deep in her bones. The incident with Elena felt like a lifetime ago, a distant nightmare replaced by the vibrant reality of family and celebration. As the dinner plates were cleared away, the venue manager handed a microphone to the best man, who delivered a heartfelt, humorous speech that brought tears of laughter to Milli’s eyes. When the best man finished, Arthur stood up from his seat, tapping his fork gently against his crystal water glass to command the attention of the room.
All eyes turned to the head table as Arthur took the microphone, his hand gripping the slim metal cylinder with a steady, deliberate pressure. He looked out over the crowd, his gaze lingering on Milli for a long moment before he began to speak.
"Good evening, everyone," Arthur’s voice boomed softly through the sound system, rich and resonant. "Standing here tonight, looking at my daughter and her wonderful new husband, I am overwhelmed with gratitude."
He paused, glancing down at his notes before deciding to speak from the heart instead. "A wedding is not just a party; it is a coming together of families, a reaffirmation of love and loyalty. Earlier today, I was reminded of what happens when we lose sight of that truth. I allowed outside influences to cloud my judgment, to push away the people who matter most, and to dishonor the memory of my late wife, Rosalie."

A hush fell over the banquet hall. Guests exchanged surprised glances at the raw honesty of the confession, but Arthur did not waver. He looked directly at Milli, his eyes shining with unshed tears. "Milli, thank you for having the courage to stand up to me, to demand the respect you and our family deserve. You saved me from making a terrible mistake, and you reminded me of who I am supposed to be as a father. I love you, and I love James. Welcome to our family, son."
The applause that followed was immediate, overwhelming, and deeply emotional. Milli wiped a tear from her cheek, feeling the final walls around her heart melt away completely.
