Chapter 11: The First Dance

The applause faded into a gentle ripple of approving smiles as the band struck up a slow, romantic melody, signaling the beginning of the traditional first dances. James extended his hand, leading Milli out onto the center of the hardwood dance floor under the warm glow of the overhead spotlights. As they wrapped their arms around each other, swaying gently to the rhythm of the music, Milli rested her head against his shoulder, letting out a long sigh of relief.
"Your dad’s speech took a lot of courage," James murmured softly into her hair, his hand resting securely on the small of her back. "I’m proud of you, Milli. You handled a nightmare situation with incredible grace."
"I just wanted our day to be real," Milli replied, her voice muffled against the fabric of his tuxedo. "I couldn't start our marriage pretending everything was fine when our foundation was cracking. But dad stepped up. He actually listened."
"He loves you, honey. People make mistakes, but it takes strength to own them publicly like he just did," James said, kissing the top of her head.
A few moments later, the band invited the parents to join the floor. Arthur walked over, offering his hand with a small, nervous smile that felt entirely human and endearing. Milli stepped away from James, taking her father’s hand as the song shifted to a timeless classic about family and growing up. As they danced, Arthur pulled her a little closer, breaking the physical distance that had grown between them over the past few years.
"How are you holding up, kiddo?" Arthur asked gently, looking down at her with a soft, affectionate smile.
"I’m wonderful, dad. Really," Milli answered, looking up into his eyes. "Thank you for listening to me today. It means everything."

"I should have listened months ago," Arthur admitted, his voice laced with genuine regret. "But I’m here now. And I’m not going anywhere."
The dance continued in a comfortable, healing silence, the emotional currents of the day finally smoothing out into peace. Around them, other couples joined the floor, filling the room with a sense of unity and shared joy that washed away the last vestiges of the afternoon's conflict.
