Chapter 9 - The Encrypted Dispatch

The intelligence officer stood panting in the doorway, his uniform jacket unbuttoned at the collar, clutching a secure red-banded tablet against his chest as if it were a live grenade. He took a sharp breath, his eyes darting frantically between General Sophia Carter, Colonel Thomas, and finally resting on the calm, unyielding presence of General Maya Lindqvist.

“General Lindqvist,” the officer gasped, saluting clumsily. “You need to see this immediately. Message just dropped from the Pentagon's central intelligence directorate.”

Maya didn't flinch. She stepped forward and took the tablet from his hands, her eyes scanning the scrolling green text of the encrypted transmission. As she read, the subtle micro-expressions on her face hardened, the sharp lines around her eyes tightening into an expression of grim realization.

Carter, noticing the shift in Maya’s demeanor, clutched the edge of the table. “What is it? Did the eastern hub command issue a counter-directive?”

“Worse,” Maya replied coldly, her voice dropping an octave. “The corruption we uncovered here isn't an isolated regional scandal. It’s part of a synchronized, multi-command asset diversion network that extends all the way to the Joint Logistics Board.”

Thomas stepped closer, his eyes wide with disbelief. “That’s impossible. The Logistics Board oversees the entire continental defense supply chain. If they’re compromised...”

“Then the entire defense apparatus has been quietly bleeding resources for over four years to fund off-the-books black-ops projects without congressional oversight,” Maya finished the sentence for him, her gaze locking onto the smart-board on the wall. With a quick swipe of her thumb, she mirrored the tablet’s classified data onto the large screen.

Rows of financial transactions, encrypted shell company registrations, and weapon-shipment manifests lit up the display. The sheer scale of the operation was staggering—billions of dollars in military hardware and maintenance funds systematically funneled away from active-duty units and redirected into private accounts and undocumented foreign proxy operations.

Carter stared at the screen, her own petty embezzlement suddenly looking like a drop of water in an ocean of corruption. “We... we were just small fish,” she whispered, the horrifying magnitude of what she had unwittingly participated in finally dawning on her. “We were just taking a cut of what the upper echelon was already siphoning off.”

“That doesn't absolve you of your crimes, Sophia,” Maya stated, her tone icy. “It only means your conspiracy went deeper than you ever dared to imagine.”

Maya turned back to the intelligence officer. “Secure the perimeter of this building. No digital transmissions leave this floor. Anyone attempting to access external servers or delete local drives is to be detained immediately.”

“Understood, General!” the officer saluted sharply and spun around, sprinting down the hallway to relay the commands.

Maya turned back to Carter and Thomas, her expression completely devoid of mercy. The time for quiet administrative restructuring was officially over. A much larger storm was coming, and they were standing right in its eye.
