Chapter 11 - Darkness in the Vault

The sudden plunge into darkness was absolute. The emergency backup generators failed to kick in instantly, leaving the interrogation room wrapped in a suffocating, velvety blackness. The low hum of the ventilation system cut out entirely, replaced by an eerie, heavy silence.
Across the stainless-steel table, General Sophia Carter stiffened. Her years of military conditioning instantly kicked in, her senses straining against the dark. “Power grid failure,” she whispered, her voice tight with sudden paranoia. “That’s not a routine blackout. That’s a localized electromagnetic pulse or a hard-line sever.”
Maya Lindqvist didn't panic. She remained perfectly still in her chair, listening closely to the faint, muffled sounds echoing through the reinforced concrete walls from the corridor outside. “They’re coming,” Maya stated calmly.
“Who?” Carter hissed, her chained hands rattling against the metal table as she shifted her weight. “The Joint Logistics Board? They wouldn't dare launch an assault on a secured holding facility on an active military base!”
“They have everything to lose, Sophia,” Maya replied, her voice steady and deliberate in the dark. “When cornered, a wounded animal doesn't negotiate. It strikes.”
Heavy footsteps echoed down the concrete hallway—rhythmic, synchronized, and moving with terrifying speed. There was no polite knocking this time, no request for authorization. A heavy mechanical thud shook the reinforced steel door of the interrogation room, followed by the screech of a high-powered plasma torch eating through the electronic locking mechanism.
Sparks showered against the bottom seam of the door, casting a blinding, brilliant orange arc that illuminated the tense angles of the room. The smell of burning metal filled the air.
“Move away from the table,” Maya commanded, standing up swiftly and drawing her sidearm with a fluid, practiced motion.
Carter hesitated for a fraction of a second, her chains clinking as she slid off the metal chair and crouched beside the heavy steel desk. “Maya, there’s an emergency extraction tunnel behind the false wall in the corner! It leads directly to the motor pool!”
“I’m not running,” Maya replied, keeping her weapon trained on the glowing, sparking door seam. “This is exactly what I wanted them to do. Step into the light.”

With a deafening crash, the heavy steel door was blown inward, crashing onto the concrete floor with a cloud of acrid smoke and dust. Through the hazy threshold, several figures emerged clad in unmarked tactical black gear, their suppressed carbines raised and scanning the room with ruthless efficiency.
