Chapter 12 - The Breach

The tactical operatives moved with terrifying, robotic synchronization. Their black combat gear bore no insignia, no flags, and no unit identifiers—pure ghost operators trained to erase loose ends without leaving a single trace of paper or DNA behind. The lead operative swept his weapon’s laser sight across the dark interrogation room, the red dot dancing over the stainless-steel table before locking onto the center of the room.
“Target sighted,” a distorted, electronically modulated voice crackled through the operative’s tactical comms unit. “Secure the high-value packages and eliminate the perimeter breach.”
Before the lead operative could squeeze the trigger of his suppressed carbine, Maya Lindqvist fired twice from a crouched position. The deafening cracks of her service pistol echoed off the concrete walls in rapid succession. The lead operative’s helmet visor shattered into a spiderweb of cracks as he stumbled backward, collapsing heavily against the smoke-filled doorway.
“Suppressing fire!” the remaining operatives shouted, unleashing a deafening volley of automatic gunfire that chewed into the steel desk and sent sparks flying in every direction.
General Sophia Carter curled into a tight ball behind the overturned metal table, plaster and concrete dust raining down on her shoulders as bullets ricocheted off the walls with terrifying velocity. The air grew thick with cordite and smoke, making every breath burn the lungs.
“Maya! There’s too many of them!” Carter screamed over the thunderous roar of gunfire, her voice cracking with pure terror. “They’re professional wet-work contractors! They’re not base security!”
Maya didn't answer. She rolled across the polished floor, taking cover behind a concrete structural pillar as her magazine clicked empty. With practiced, lightning-fast economy of motion, she ejected the empty magazine, slammed a fresh one into the grip of her pistol, and peered around the edge of the pillar.
Two operatives were advancing side-by-side, their weapons raised in a textbook clearing formation, stepping right over the body of their fallen team leader.
Maya took a slow, deep breath, centered her sights, and fired twice. Both operatives dropped instantly, neutralizing the immediate advance, but the sharp clatter of a heavy cylindrical object rolling across the concrete floor shattered any momentary relief.
A flash-bang grenade came to a rest just a few feet from Maya’s position.

“Grenade!” Maya yelled, diving away from the pillar just as the device detonated with a blinding flash of white light and a concussive shockwave that rattled the fillings in Carter’s teeth and plunged the room into a deafening, high-pitched ringing silence.
