Chapter 5 - The Uninvited Guest

The electronic chime of the intercom echoed through the tense silence of Conference Room B, freezing everyone in their seats. General Carter stared at the small silver speaker grill on the wall as if it were a venomous snake about to strike.

“General Carter,” a static-laced voice crackled from the security desk downstairs. “We have an issue at the primary basement elevator bank. General Lindqvist’s advance team has just seized control of the physical archives sub-level. They’re overriding our security clearances.”

Colonel Thomas sprang to his feet, knocking his chair backward onto the carpeted floor. “That’s impossible! Those archives require dual-key biometric authorization from both logistics command and base security. They can’t just walk in.”

“They didn’t walk in, Colonel,” the voice replied, strained with panic. “They brought a federal writ signed directly by the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs. My guards stood down. They’re securing the physical ledgers right now.”

Carter’s breath hitched in her throat. The physical ledgers—the actual paper records containing the ink-and-signature proof of every illicit transfer, every ghost employee, and every skimmed maintenance budget—were down in that subterranean vault. For years, she had relied on the bureaucratic assumption that digital files could be corrupted or denied, but that paper trail was absolute.

“Lock down the sector,” Carter commanded, her voice regaining a desperate, shrill authority. “Deploy the military police to the basement access stairwell. Nobody enters that vault without my direct, written authorization!”

“General,” the security guard’s voice hesitated, heavy with dread. “The military police down there... they’ve already lowered their weapons. They’re taking orders from General Lindqvist’s detail. She’s walking toward the elevator right now, and she’s headed straight up to this floor.”

Carter slammed her palm down onto the mahogany table, rattling the water pitchers once more. “This is a blatant overreach of jurisdiction! I am still the commanding officer of this facility! I demand to speak with the base commander immediately!”

“The base commander is currently sitting in General Lindqvist’s convoy, sir,” the guard replied flatly before the line clicked dead, plunging the room back into a chilling, unbroken silence.

Thomas slumped back into his chair, running a trembling hand over his thinning hair. “It’s over, Sophia. She didn't just come here to catch us off guard. She built an airtight trap, and we walked right into it like recruits on their first day of basic training.”

Carter didn't answer. Her eyes remained locked on the heavy mahogany doors of the conference room. She could hear the distinct, rhythmic sound of military boots echoing down the hallway—slow, deliberate, and entirely unhurried.
