Chapter 13 - The Smoke Clears

The high-pitched ringing in General Sophia Carter’s ears sounded like a distant jet engine. She shook her head violently, blinking through the stinging haze of white smoke and pulverized concrete dust that choked the interrogation room. Her hands still bound by the loose metal cuffs, she pushed herself up from the floor, coughing violently as her lungs rebelled against the thick cordite fumes.
Through the hazy white fog, the heavy steel doorframe loomed like a jagged wound in the concrete wall. Three dark tactical figures lay motionless on the floor, neutralized by Maya’s precise defensive fire.
Carter stumbled forward, her knees trembling beneath her, scanning the ruins of the interrogation room. “Maya?” she rasped, her voice barely audible over the persistent ringing in her ears. “Maya, report!”
A hand reached out from behind the concrete structural pillar, grabbing Carter’s arm to steady her. General Maya Lindqvist stood up, dusting off the front of her military tunic with a calm, methodical gesture. A small scratch bled sluggishly along her jawline, but her eyes were razor-sharp and entirely uncompromised.
“I’m here, Sophia,” Maya said steadily, checking the remaining ammunition in her sidearm magazine.
“They weren't just trying to silence us,” Carter whispered, staring down at the unmarked tactical gear of the fallen operatives. “If those contractors breached the facility, it means the Joint Logistics Board has completely activated their contingency protocol. They’re purging everyone—guilty and innocent alike.”
“Which means we no longer have the luxury of playing by administrative rules,” Maya replied, sliding her pistol back into its holster with a decisive click. She reached down, pulled a heavy tactical radio off the belt of the nearest fallen operative, and switched the frequency to an open broadcast channel.
“What are you doing?” Carter asked, her eyes widening in apprehension.
“Calling in the cavalry,” Maya stated simply. She keyed the microphone. “This is Lieutenant General Maya Lindqvist, Special Inspector General. Priority Red broadcast to all loyal units across the continental defense network. We have an active insurrection within the Joint Logistics Command.”
For a tense moment, the radio hissed with static. Carter held her breath, acutely aware that broadcasting on an open frequency meant every loyalist and traitor within a five-hundred-mile radius would hear their exact location.
Suddenly, a crisp, authoritative voice broke through the static hiss. “General Lindqvist, this is Strategic Command Operations. We copy your Priority Red transmission. Base perimeter security units are mobilizing across all sectors. What are your coordinates?”
“Sub-level three, interrogation sector,” Maya commanded clearly, her voice echoing off the concrete walls. “Secure all exits, lock down the mainframe, and deploy military police teams to arrest every member of the Joint Logistics Board currently on base.”
“Affirmative, General. Reinforcements are inbound. ETA three minutes.”
May you like
Carter slumped back against the concrete wall, a strange, exhausted smile finally touching her lips. The machine was breaking, and for the first time in her career, she was standing on the right side of the wreckage.
