Chapter 9: Emerging into the Alley

The iron ladder at the end of the utility tunnel rose straight up into a cast-iron manhole cover that opened directly into the narrow, rain-slicked alley behind the downtown public library. The air that drifted down from above was sharp, clean, and smelled of wet asphalt and distant exhaust fumes—a welcome relief from the stale, humid confines of the underground conduit.
Officer Glaty climbed the first few rungs of the ladder, pushing upward against the heavy iron lid. It gave way with a dull, metallic clank, shifting just enough to allow a wedge of cool night air and neon light to flood the dark shaft. She poked her head out first, her eyes sweeping the narrow alleyway in both directions.
The rain had tapered off into a fine, shimmering mist that caught the amber glow of the streetlamps at the mouth of the alley. Dumpsters lined the brick walls of the library annex, casting long, deep shadows, but the concrete path itself was entirely clear of pedestrians and patrol cars.
Glaty dropped back down the ladder a few feet and looked down at Mateo, who stood waiting at the base with his hands clenched into tight fists inside his pockets.
""Coast is clear,"" she whispered, her voice sharp and encouraging. ""Follow me up, stay close to the brick wall, and keep your hood up.""
Mateo scrambled up the rungs with surprising agility, his small hands gripping the cold iron bars until he popped out into the damp night air beside Glaty. The officer immediately pulled the heavy iron lid back into place, letting it settle into its frame with a dull thud that was instantly swallowed by the distant rumble of city traffic on Main Street.
They pressed themselves flat against the damp red brick of the library annex, blending seamlessly into the shadows of the loading dock. Glaty unclipped her encrypted portable radio, pressing the transmit toggle with her thumb.
""Control, this is Glaty. I am off-site, sector nine, library alley. Requesting a clean extraction unit at my coordinates. I have a civilian minor in protective custody.""
For a long moment, only static hissed through the small earpiece. Then, a crisp, professional voice broke through the noise—not the corrupt local dispatch board, but the direct encrypted frequency of the federal district field office.
*“Copy, Glaty. Extraction van is turning onto Fourth Street now. Unmarked dark sedan, plates ending in seven-four-two. Hold your position.”*

Glaty let out a long, slow breath she didn't realize she’d been holding. Help was finally real, tangible, and only a block away. She looked down at Mateo, offering a warm, reassuring smile that chased the last lingering shadows of fear from the boy's face.
""We did it, Mateo,"" she said quietly, resting a gloved hand on his shoulder. ""The cavalry is on the way.""
