Chapter 1: The Neon Refuge

The air inside the Grand Meridian Casino smelled faintly of stale tobacco, expensive air freshener, and the ozone hum of a thousand spinning digital reels. For ten-year-old Mateo, the cacophony was a terrifying wall of sound. His dark eyes, wide and bloodshot from hours of adrenaline-fueled terror, darted between the flashing lights of slot machines and the patterned carpet beneath his sneakers. His lungs burned, and his chest rose and fell beneath his oversized dark grey hoodie in ragged, shallow gasps.
Only moments ago, he had slipped through the revolving glass doors, desperate to lose himself in the cavernous labyrinth of the gaming floor. Behind him, two men in dark casual clothing—one in a heavy black leather jacket, the other in a worn grey hoodie—had been methodically tracking his movements through the crowded downtown streets. They were not police; they were something far worse, men with cold eyes and hurried, predatory strides.
Mateo spotted a dark green uniform standing resolutely amid the glittering chaos. He did not hesitate. Ducking low beneath the metallic blur of a nearby payout tray, he threw himself forward and wrapped his small arms tightly around the legs of the security officer.
Officer Glaty stiffened instinctively at the sudden impact, her hand dropping automatically toward her service belt before she recognized the small, trembling form pressed against her thighs. Her dark hair, pulled back neatly into a professional ponytail, shifted as she looked down. Mateo’s face was buried in the heavy fabric of her trousers.
""Please don't tell them,"" the boy whispered softly, his voice a frail tremor that barely cut through the synthetic jingles of the casino floor.
Glaty’s expression transformed instantly from professional alertness into profound maternal concern. She didn't scream, and she didn't push him away. Instead, she knelt smoothly to his eye level, her movements unhurried and deliberate. With one hand, she reached up to tap the small communication earpiece nestled against her ear, speaking in a low, measured cadence to dispatch.
""Control, this is Glaty, sector four. I have a situation near the high-limit tables. Requesting a quiet sweep of the south atrium.""
As she spoke, her sharp eyes scanned the perimeter. Just twenty yards away, past a row of silent, glowing video poker terminals, two figures moved with deliberate casualness. The man in the black leather jacket paused, his gaze sweeping the floor, while his companion in the grey hoodie checked his watch. They were searching, systematically closing the net. Glaty locked eyes with the man in the leather jacket for a fraction of a second, projecting an aura of absolute, unyielding authority. The man hesitated, muttered something to his partner, and steered his steps toward the secondary exit, temporarily deterred.
Glaty turned her complete, undivided attention back to the terrified child shivering before her.

""I thought they'd find me,"" Mateo confessed, a tear finally escaping to track a clean path through the dust on his cheek.
Glaty reached out, her fingers warm and steady, and offered a gentle, anchoring smile. ""Not tonight,"" she said quietly, her voice a solid anchor in the storm. Slowly, deliberately, she opened her arms and pulled him into a protective, steady embrace, letting his head rest firmly against her shoulder as the ambient noise of the casino faded into the background.
