Chapter 12: The Quiet Morning

Sunlight streamed through the clean white blinds of the safehouse guest bedroom, casting long, geometric bars of golden light across the hardwood floor. When Mateo opened his eyes, he didn't hear the deafening roar of slot machines or the harsh shouting of men in dark jackets down a tenement hallway. Instead, he heard the gentle rustle of oak leaves outside the window and the faint, comforting clink of silverware coming from the kitchen.
The boy sat up slowly, rubbing his eyes with the back of his hand. He was still wearing the dark grey hoodie and jeans from the night before, but the garments felt clean, warm, and entirely removed from the terrifying context in which he had put them on.
As he swung his legs over the edge of the bed and stepped onto the floor, the bedroom door clicked open quietly. Officer Glaty stood in the doorway. She had changed out of her dark green security uniform into comfortable civilian clothes—a simple navy blue sweater and dark denim trousers—though the silver police badge was still clipped neatly to her belt loop as a quiet symbol of identity and continuity.
""Good morning, Mateo,"" Glaty said with a gentle, reassuring smile. ""Did you sleep well?""
Mateo nodded, a shy, relieved smile touching the corners of his mouth. ""I slept really well,"" he admitted softly, walking over toward the doorway. ""Where are we?""
""We're in a safe place on the other side of town,"" Glaty replied, stepping aside to let him walk out into the sunlit hallway. ""And I have a surprise for you in the kitchen.""
As Mateo rounded the corner into the open-plan kitchen and dining area, his dark eyes widened with absolute disbelief and joy. Sitting at the small wooden table, sipping a cup of coffee and looking tired but entirely whole, was his father.

""Dad!"" Mateo cried out, his voice cracking with sudden emotion as he sprinted across the room and threw his arms around his father’s neck.
His father caught him fiercely, burying his face in the boy’s dark hair, his shoulders shaking with the quiet, profound relief of a parent who had nearly lost everything and miraculously gotten it all back. Glaty stood back near the doorway, watching the reunion with a quiet, grounded smile, feeling the last lingering tension of the long night completely dissolve away.
