Chapter 6: The Labyrinth of Linen

The vast subterranean laundry sorting facility felt like a maze designed by an architect who wanted to swallow people whole. Rows upon rows of towering metal shelving units stretched out into the gloom, laden with mountains of industrial-grade sheets, heavy wool blankets, and pristine white towels. The rhythmic, heavy *thump-thump* of commercial washing machines thrummed through the concrete floor beneath their sneakers, providing a chaotic, vibrating bassline that masked their footsteps but did nothing to soothe their frazzled nerves.
Officer Glaty crouched near the edge of a primary sorting aisle, her eyes scanning the perimeter for any movement. She held her portable radio close to her chest, the tiny green power LED glowing faintly in the dim light.
""Stay right behind my left shoulder, Mateo,"" she whispered, her gaze never settling for more than a second as she checked the intersections between the shelving rows. ""If anything happens—if you hear footsteps that don't sound like mine—drop flat between these linen carts and do not make a sound until I come back for you. Do you understand?""
Mateo nodded solemnly, his dark eyes wide and fixed on her face. He clutched the hem of his dark grey hoodie with white-knuckled fingers, his small frame trembling slightly from the combination of cold air and raw adrenaline. ""I understand,"" he murmured back, his voice steadying with a sudden, mature resolve that surprised even him.
They began to move again, weaving through the labyrinthine aisles with calculated stealth. Glaty led the way, her posture defensive, her hand resting lightly near the retention strap of her sidearm. Every corner they turned presented a new geometry of shadows, and every towering stack of linens looked like it could conceal a waiting adversary.
As they approached the far wall of the facility, a sharp metallic click echoed from the heavy fire door they had used to enter the room only minutes earlier.
Glaty froze, halting Mateo with a quick downward sweep of her hand. Both of them ducked instantly behind a massive rolling hamper filled with damp towels.
Through a narrow gap between the metal bars of the hamper, Glaty watched as the Sector B door pushed open. Two silhouettes detached themselves from the stairwell gloom and stepped onto the concrete floor of the laundry room. Even in the dim light, the distinctive silhouette of the black leather jacket identified Victor instantly. His partner in the grey hoodie followed closely behind, holding a heavy-duty tactical flashlight whose bright white beam began to sweep methodically across the floor.

""Check the aisles,"" Victor’s voice hissed, carrying clearly across the open space above the hum of the washers. ""Pendelton said she’s an officer who takes her job too seriously. She won't use the main elevators, which means she’s trying to punch through the service corridors to the delivery docks.""
The beam of the tactical flashlight cut through the darkness just two aisles away, illuminating floating dust motes in a harsh, glaring streak. The white light swept slowly toward the very stack of linens where Glaty and Mateo were hiding.
