Chapter 10: The Unmarked Sedan

The sleek, dark sedan glided silently down Fourth Street, its headlights turned off until the driver spotted the narrow alleyway behind the library. The vehicle drifted to a smooth halt against the curb, the engine purring with a low, refined hum that contrasted sharply with the aggressive roar of the city buses passing by on the main thoroughfare.
Officer Glaty kept a protective arm around Mateo’s shoulders as they stepped out from the deep shadows of the library loading dock. The rear door of the sedan clicked open automatically, revealing a softly lit leather interior and a man in a plain charcoal suit who flashed a small, metallic silver shield before sliding across the seat to make room.
""Officer Glaty?"" the man asked, his voice calm, measured, and entirely devoid of unnecessary theatrics. ""And young Mateo?""
""That's us,"" Glaty replied, guiding the boy into the back seat before sliding in beside him and pulling the heavy door shut. The cabin was warm, smelling faintly of leather and clean rain.
As the sedan pulled smoothly away from the curb and merged into the light downtown traffic, Mateo sank back into the plush leather upholstery. The tension that had held his ten-year-old body rigid for the past two hours finally began to evaporate, leaving behind a profound, bone-deep exhaustion. His dark eyes grew heavy, blinking slowly as the neon lights of the city streaked past the tinted windows in a blur of red and gold.
""Are those men still going to find us?"" Mateo asked softly, his voice thick with fatigue as he rested his head against Glaty’s shoulder.
Glaty wrapped her arm around him, pulling him close in a steady, protective embrace. ""No, Mateo,"" she answered firmly, her tone leaving no room for doubt. ""Federal agents are already securing your father’s apartment, and Victor and his associates won't be able to step foot anywhere near the Federal Reserve tonight. You're completely safe now.""
The federal agent in the front passenger seat turned around slightly, resting his arm on the back of his headrest. ""Your father is already in federal protective custody, Mateo,"" the agent added gently. ""He’s safe, and he has the notebook with him. You did an extraordinary thing tonight by protecting that information and finding Officer Glaty.""

Mateo didn't answer with words; he simply nodded against Glaty’s shoulder, his eyelids fluttering shut as the rhythmic motion of the moving car lulled him toward sleep. For the first time since the men in dark jackets had kicked open their apartment door, the boy felt the terrifying weight lift entirely from his chest.
Glaty watched him drift off, her expression softening completely as she looked down at the dark hair resting against her dark green uniform. She had worn that badge for over a decade, walking the thin, dangerous line between order and chaos every single day, but tonight felt different. Tonight, the uniform had meant everything.
