An hour later, an emergency rescue boat from her father’s offshore research station picked Evelyn up. The crew, led by Dr. Marcus Vance—her father’s most trusted colleague—wrapped her in thermal blankets and checked the baby’s heartbeat.

“The baby is strong, Evelyn,” Marcus said softly, his voice trembling with emotion. “It’s a miracle.”

“It wasn't a miracle, Marcus,” Evelyn murmured, looking out at the dark waters. “It was love. My father’s legacy protected us.”
