Chapter 2: Titan of the Deep

Far beneath the continental shelf, where light had never reached, something vast shifted in response to the signal.
Years ago, Evelyn’s father had rescued and tagged a leviathan—a rare, gentle humpback-blue whale hybrid mutated by deep-sea pressures, known to their family as Proteus. Proteus had remained bonded to the acoustic signature of her father’s transmitter.

As Evelyn’s vision began to blur, a massive shadow broke through the thermal layers. A gentle, colossal body drifted beneath her, halting her descent. Proteus nudged her upward with carefully measured grace, cradling the pregnant woman upon his massive, barnacled flipper.
Breaching the surface near the yacht, Evelyn gasped for air. She lifted the transponder high into the fading light, her glowing blue-grey eyes locking onto Julian, who peered over the yacht’s rail in sheer horror. The water stirred into a violent swell as the giant beast rose beside her.
