Chapter 7 - The Figure in White

The figure stepped out of the absolute blackness of the annex threshold, the dim emergency lighting casting long, distorted shadows across the hallway. It was a woman in her late twenties, though her skin was deathly pale, stretched taut across high cheekbones like parchment paper over bone. She wore a simple, tattered white dress that was deeply stained with dark, oxidized crimson across the front. Her long, dark hair fell in damp tangles around her face, partially obscuring hollow, sunken eyes that burned with an intense, haunting recognition as they locked onto Ricardo.

In her frail, trembling hands, she held a small wooden dollhouse—an exact, weathered replica of the one resting on the white rug two floors below.

Leo whimpered softly against Ricardo’s neck, squeezing his eyes tightly shut, refusing to look. "Dad... that's her. That's the lady who plays with the toys in the dark."

Ricardo’s mind raced, trying to bridge the impossible chasm between reality and nightmare. This wasn't a ghost. The physical reality of her presence—the ragged breathing, the calloused, bruised fingers gripping the wooden toy, the faint scent of copper and dust—proved she was flesh and blood. She was a living human being who had been locked away in a soundproofed, hidden vault in his own home for years.

"Who... who are you?" Ricardo managed to ask, his voice tight, strained by a terrifying mixture of horror and profound, crushing pity.

The woman stepped closer, her bare feet making soft, padding sounds against the cold hardwood. She tilted her head, studying Ricardo’s face with unsettling intensity. Her cracked lips parted, and when she spoke, her voice was raspy, dry, and unused, like paper sliding across sandpaper.

"You have his eyes," she whispered, her gaze shifting slightly to look at Leo huddled in Ricardo’s arms. "He brought you here, didn't he? He built this house over my grave, and he put you in the exact same room."

"Your grave?" Ricardo echoed, his heart hammering against his ribs. He slowly backed away a step, sensing the deadly peril of the situation, yet unable to turn his back and run. "Who are you talking about? Helena? Helena is downstairs."

A bitter, chilling laugh escaped the woman’s throat. It was a sharp, grating sound that lacked any warmth. "Helena isn't my sister's name. It’s the name she stole when she locked me in this cage twenty years ago and told the world I died in the fire. She took my life, she took my inheritance, and now... she’s trying to finish the game with the boy."

Downstairs, the sharp, distinct sound of a gunshot echoed through the open foyer, followed by the shattering of glass and a muffled scream.

Ricardo froze. Viktor was still down there with Helena.

The woman in white lunged forward with surprising speed, grabbing the sleeve of Ricardo’s dark suit jacket with a grip of iron. Her sunken eyes widened in absolute terror as she pointed a trembling finger down the darkened stairwell.

"You have to run," she hissed urgently, pulling him toward the open annex door behind her. "She didn't leave the front door unlocked for a visitor. She left it open for the cleanup crew."
