Chapter 6 - Footsteps Above

The heavy, dragging sound above their heads rattled the recessed light fixtures in the ceiling. It sounded like someone—or something—dragging a massive, heavy trunk across aged hardwood floorboards. The rhythm was slow, deliberate, and undeniably heavy, echoing through the pristine modern architecture like a drumbeat of impending doom.
Ricardo froze, his hand still hovering in the air where he had dropped the miniature wooden figure. He stared up at the ceiling, every instinct screaming at him that the clean, minimalist lines of their luxury home were a deliberate facade masking a rotting, terrible core.
Viktor’s composure vanished instantly. The hardened, cynical expression on his face was replaced by a flash of genuine terror. He instinctively reached inside his trench coat, his hand wrapping around the grip of a concealed weapon. "She’s out," Viktor whispered, his voice losing its confident edge. "That’s impossible. I welded the deadbolt shut myself."
Helena didn't look up at the ceiling. She kept her eyes locked on Ricardo, her smile widening into something deeply unsettling. The sophisticated woman in the burgundy dress was gone, replaced by a ghost from the dark, forgotten corridors of the Maine estate.
"Nothing stays buried in our family, Ricardo," Helena said softly, her voice echoing in the dead silence of the room. "You wanted the truth. You wanted to know what was upstairs. Well, the door has been opened. And she remembers every single promise you made when you moved into this house and promised to protect us from the past."
Ricardo ignored her. He looked down at Leo, scooping the trembling eight-year-old boy directly into his arms. Leo buried his face in the crook of Ricardo’s neck, his small hands gripping his father’s shoulders with desperate strength.
"Stay here," Ricardo commanded Viktor, his voice cutting through the noise of the dragging sound above.
"Don't be a fool, Vance," Viktor hissed, taking a step forward. "You don't know what’s waiting up those stairs. That isn't just a ghost of the past—it’s a living consequence."
"I don't care," Ricardo said, his dark eyes flashing with a fierce, protective resolve. "That’s my house. My son is safe."
With Leo held tightly against his chest, Ricardo turned away from the living room and walked toward the grand staircase. Each step he took felt like walking into an abyss. The bright modern aesthetic of the home seemed to peel away with every vertical foot he gained, revealing peeling wallpaper, dust-covered banisters, and the distinct, metallic scent of iron and old wood.
The dragging sound stopped abruptly as Ricardo reached the landing of the second floor.
The hallway stretched out before him, plunged into an unnatural, absolute darkness that the sunlight from the windows below refused to penetrate. At the very end of the corridor stood a heavy, wrought-iron reinforced door—the sealed annex that Helena had sworn didn't exist.
And the door was standing wide open.
A cold, freezing draft billowed out from the dark interior of the annex, carrying the faint, unmistakable sound of a music box playing a haunting, discordant lullaby.
Ricardo swallowed hard, his boots clicking softly against the floor as he took one step toward the threshold of the forbidden room.

From the shadows inside the open doorway, a slender figure stepped forward into the dim light, wearing a bloodstained white dress and holding a matching miniature wooden dollhouse identical to the one downstairs.
