Chapter 12 - The Breaching of the Second Floor

Heavy boots pounded against the wooden stairs of the grand foyer, shouting voices echoing through the open-concept hallways.

"Clear! Clear the landing!" a gruff police officer commanded, his flashlight cutting through the dim air as three armed officers rushed around the corner of the second-floor corridor. Their weapons were raised, tactical vests bearing bold FBI insignia catching the flashing red and blue light from the squad cars outside.

Ricardo stood frozen on the threshold of the annex, still shielding Leo in his arms. Eleanor stood beside him, clutching the weathered Blackwood family journal to her chest like a shield. At the base of the spiral staircase a few yards away, Helena lay crumpled in a motionless heap, the antique revolver resting out of reach a few feet down the steps.

"Freeze! Drop your weapons! Hands where we can see them!" the lead officer barked, leveling his assault rifle directly at Ricardo.

"Don't shoot! My son is here!" Ricardo shouted, raising his free hand slowly, ensuring the phone and the digital ledger were clearly visible. "I'm Ricardo Vance. The homeowner. My wife is down there—she orchestrated the whole thing. There’s a body in the foyer, and the real evidence of twenty years of fraud is right here in this journal."

The lead officer, a weathered detective with sharp gray eyes and a heavy badge pinned to his tactical vest, lowered his rifle fractionally, though his stance remained tense and defensive. He looked from Ricardo to the unconscious woman at the base of the stairs, then over at Eleanor emerging from the dark annex.

"Agent Miller, Federal Bureau of Investigation," the officer announced, stepping closer while signaling his subordinates to secure the perimeter and check Helena's pulse. One of the junior officers rushed down the stairs to secure the weapon and check the foyer below where Viktor’s body lay. "We’ve been tracking the Blackwood shell corporation network for six months, Mr. Vance. We received an anonymous tip with a complete digital data dump twenty minutes ago."

Ricardo exhaled a breath he felt like he had been holding for days. He looked down at Leo, whose small body had finally stopped trembling. The boy looked up with wide, exhausted eyes, his dark brown hair damp with sweat.

"Dad... can we go home now?" Leo whispered softly, his voice heartbreakingly small.

Ricardo’s throat tightened with emotion. He knelt down, carefully setting the boy on his feet for the first time since the ordeal began. "We are going somewhere safe, buddy. I promise you, nobody is ever going to lock us in this house again."

Agent Miller walked over, kneeling down beside Leo with a gentle expression that contrasted sharply with his tactical gear. He pulled a small, foil-wrapped chocolate bar from his pocket and offered it to the boy with a reassuring smile.

"You did a very brave thing today, young man," Miller said softly. "You helped us close a very dark chapter."

As the junior officer rushed back up the stairs, panting heavily, his face pale and serious, he whispered something directly into Agent Miller’s ear that made the detective’s expression instantly harden.

Miller stood up slowly, looking directly at Ricardo with a look of profound shock.

"Mr. Vance," Miller said, his voice dropping to a grave, urgent whisper. "Your wife didn't act alone. There’s a second body in the downstairs basement study. And it’s not Viktor."
