Chapter 10 - The Sirens Approach

The glowing screen of the cell phone cast a harsh, blue light across Ricardo’s tense face. The word POLICE pulsed relentlessly against the dark corridor backdrop. Downstairs, the ambient silence of the luxurious modern home was suddenly pierced by the distant, rising howl of approaching sirens. The red and blue emergency lights began to paint rhythmic, flashing patterns across the high glass windows of the foyer.
Ricardo looked down at the phone in his hand, then back into the shadowy depths of the annex where Eleanor stood in the dim light of the flickering dollhouses.
"Don't answer it," Eleanor warned, stepping forward with her hands raised defensively. "If you speak to them now, before we have the physical evidence from the vault, Helena will have already spun her story. The responding officers are local jurisdiction—jurisdiction that your wife’s offshore shell corporations have been funding for the past ten years."
Ricardo’s thumb hovered over the decline button, his executive training warring with his primal protective instincts. "We can't just hide up here while the police walk into a crime scene with a dead body and zero context, Eleanor. My son is here. I have to control the narrative before she destroys us completely."
"You can't control a game that was rigged before you even sat at the table," a calm, chilling voice echoed from the top of the dark stairwell leading up to the fourth-floor attic.
Ricardo spun around, holding Leo protectively behind him.
Standing on the narrow spiral staircase leading further up into the darkness was Helena. The burgundy dress she wore was flawless, untouched by the violence downstairs, though her manicured hands were stained a dark, glossy red. She held a heavy, antique revolver loosely by her side, the barrel pointed downward toward the floor. Her dark hair fell around her shoulders in perfect waves, and her expression was one of profound, serene triumph.
"It’s over, Ricardo," Helena said softly, taking a slow step down the spiral stairs. "Viktor was a trespasser who broke in and threatened our family. You tried to defend us, things got out of hand in the struggle, and in your panic, you locked yourself in the annex. It’s a tragic, unfortunate accident of domestic violence."
Leo began to cry softly again, clinging tightly to Ricardo’s trousers. "She’s lying, Dad. She hurt the man downstairs. I saw her from the window."
Helena’s eyes flickered down toward the boy, a flash of cold cruelty crossing her features before vanishing beneath a mask of maternal grief. "See? Even the boy is traumatized by his father’s violent outburst. You’ve lost control, Ricardo. Just put the phone down, hand me the ledger, and let this end quietly."
The wailing of the police sirens grew deafeningly loud directly outside the front entrance, followed by the heavy thud of car doors slamming shut and the crunch of boots on the gravel driveway.
Ricardo looked at the revolver in Helena’s hand, then down at the ledger clutched in Eleanor’s trembling grasp. The front door downstairs rattled as heavy police knocks shook the entire foundation of the house.
"Police! Open up! Drop your weapons!" a muffled voice shouted through the downstairs intercom.
Helena smiled, raising the antique revolver slightly as she leveled it directly at Ricardo’s chest.

"Time's up, darling," Helena whispered.
