Chapter 13 - The Basement Study

The basement level of the modern architectural masterpiece was supposed to be a state-of-the-art wine cellar and secure archive room, built with thick concrete walls and smart-locking steel doors. But as Ricardo, Eleanor, and Agent Miller descended the subterranean concrete steps, the air grew instantly cold, smelling sharply of damp earth, old paper, and copper.

The smart-locking steel door to the basement study was standing wide open, its digital keypad flashing a red error code.

Agent Miller unholstered his sidearm, stepping cautiously across the threshold with his flashlight cutting through the darkness. The beam illuminated rows of mahogany bookshelves, a large executive desk, and in the center of the polished concrete floor, a figure seated in a leather desk chair, slumped forward over an open ledger.

Ricardo stepped into the room, holding Leo’s hand tightly while keeping the boy’s eyes averted from the gruesome sight. Eleanor walked beside them, her face set in grim determination.

Miller stepped up to the desk and gently touched the shoulder of the figure in the chair. The body shifted slightly, revealing the face of an elderly man with silver hair and wire-rimmed glasses.

Ricardo gasped, his hand flying to his mouth. "My father..."

The elderly man in the chair wasn't vacationing in Europe, as Helena had claimed for the past three years. He had been right here, locked away in his own basement, killed by the very web of deceit he had helped spin decades ago.

Miller checked the pulse on the cold wrist, then shook his head solemnly. "He’s been gone for at least forty-eight hours, Mr. Vance. Cause of death appears to be an intentional overdose of cardiac medication, forced or administered against his will."

On the mahogany desk, right beside the elderly man's motionless hand, rested another small toy dollhouse—an exact, miniature replica of the basement study itself. Inside the tiny room of the toy, a microscopic figure of an elderly man was posed slumped over a miniature desk.

Eleanor walked over to the desk, her fingers tracing the edge of the wooden toy. She picked it up carefully, her eyes filled with a bitter, vindictive triumph.
