Chapter 9

The synchronized pounding on the grand oak doors reverberated through the dining hall, drowning out the ambient hum of the ventilation system. The lead federal agent frowned, tapping his comms unit to verify the tactical roster assigned to the perimeter.

“Team Two, report. Did you authorize a secondary breach at the front entrance?” the agent asked sharply into his shoulder mic.

Static hissed through the earpiece for a agonizing second before a voice broke through, tense and breathless.

“Negative, command. We are holding the perimeter gardens. Those aren't our guys!” the radio crackled back.

Julian’s head snapped up, a manic, desperate light returning to his eyes as he looked toward the foyer. Evelyn gripped her cane tighter, her aristocratic composure finally fracturing completely as she realized they had become pawns in a much larger, deadlier game that extended far beyond family greed.

“It’s the oversight board,” Evelyn whispered, her voice trembling. “They’re clearing house. No trials, no leaks.”

Before the lead agent could issue a command to secure the exits, the massive oak doors of the dining hall burst inward with explosive force. Splintered wood flew in all directions as half a dozen tactical operatives in unmarked matte-black gear flooded the room, their assault rifles raised and pointed with terrifying precision.

“Down on the floor! Hands on your heads! Do it now!” the tactical commander roared, his voice amplified by the helmet-mounted comms system.

Marcus Cole’s private security guards instinctively reached for their sidearms, but before their hands could even brush their holsters, a barrage of non-lethal flash-bang stun grenades was tossed into the center of the room.

The dining hall erupted into a blinding flash of white light and a concussive boom that rattled the crystal chandelier overhead. Elena dropped instantly to her knees, shielding her head with her hands as the shockwave washed over her. The white button-down shirt caught on a jagged piece of crystal glass on the floor, tearing slightly near the shoulder.

Through the thick white smoke and ringing in her ears, Elena watched as Marcus Cole and his guards were forced to the ground, pinned by heavy tactical boots.

The tactical commander strode directly toward the mahogany table, ignoring the handcuffed Julian and the trembling Evelyn. He stopped in front of the federal agent, flashing a gold badge that bore no agency name—only a serialized cryptographic stamp.

“Federal oversight is officially suspended under Executive Directive 88-B,” the commander stated coldly, holding out his hand for the evidence bags containing the micro-sd cufflink and the brass key.

Elena raised her head from the floor, her heart pounding against her ribs as she stared at the unmarked badge.
