Chapter 4

Julian backed away from the table as Elena advanced, his tuxedo suddenly looking more like a straitjacket than formal wear. The veneer of untouchable wealth that had protected the Vance family for generations was cracking under the weight of a single phone call. Evelyn remained seated, her posture rigid, her mind clearly racing to calculate the damage control required for their social standing.
“You have no proof,” Julian said, though his voice lacked conviction, sounding like a man trying to convince himself rather than his sister. “The physical ledgers were destroyed in the warehouse fire back in ninety-eight.”
Elena stopped just a few feet from him, a faint, humorless smile touching the corners of her mouth. She reached into the pocket of her tailored trousers, her fingers brushing against a cold metal flash drive that she had retrieved from the private study before dinner.
“Not all of them, Julian,” Elena said softly. “Old habits die hard. Father kept digital backups on micro-sd cards disguised as pearl cufflinks. The ones you were so careful to wear tonight.”
Julian’s hand instinctively flew to his left cuff, his fingers brushing the smooth, iridescent surface of the false button. The color drained completely from his face, leaving him looking older, hollowed out by decades of paranoia and guilt.
Evelyn inhaled sharply, her hand dropping from her necklace as she understood the full magnitude of the betrayal.
“You searched his personal effects,” Evelyn whispered, the accusation hanging heavily in the chilled air of the dining room.
“I did what the board lacked the courage to do after the audit flagged the missing pension funds,” Elena replied without flinching.
Before Julian could lunge for her cuffs to rip them away, the heavy double doors of the dining hall swung open with a resounding thud. A tall, impeccably dressed man in a charcoal suit stepped into the room, flanked by two federal marshals whose badges gleamed under the chandeliers.

“Elena Vance?” the lead agent asked, his voice echoing authoritatively across the polished hardwood floor.
Elena turned slowly toward the entrance, lifting her chin as she pulled the small pearl cufflink from Julian’s sleeve and held it up for the federal agent to see.
