Chapter 7

The red wax seals on the manila folder gleamed under the dining room lights, bearing the official insignia of the federal banking commission. Julian slumped further between the two marshals, his knees nearly buckling as the final pillar of his corporate immunity crumbled into dust. Evelyn’s hand trembled visibly against her cane, the illusion of her untouchable dynasty shattering piece by piece upon the blood-stained Persian rug.

“That’s impossible,” Evelyn whispered, her voice losing its previous steel edge. “The commission doesn't move on holiday weekends without a seventy-two-hour review period.”

Marcus Cole stepped closer, his trench coat damp from the storm outside, smelling faintly of ozone and expensive cologne. He tossed the folder onto the center of the dining table, right over the scattered crystal and silver cutlery.

“Rules change, Mrs. Vance, when the primary shareholder voluntarily surrenders the encrypted master keys to the federal prosecutor,” Marcus said, casting a deliberate, significant glance toward Elena.

Evelyn slowly turned her head, her aged eyes fixing upon her granddaughter with a look of pure, unadulterated betrayal.

“You gave them everything,” Evelyn said, her voice shaking with restrained fury. “You sold out your own blood for a badge and a clean conscience.”

Elena stood her ground, her white button-down shirt uncreased despite the chaos around her. She looked her grandmother dead in the eye, refusing to shrink from the immense weight of the accusation.

“I didn't sell out my family, grandmother,” Elena replied coldly. “I stopped protecting criminals who happened to share my last name. There is a distinct difference.”

The lead federal agent stepped forward, placing a protective hand near his holster as Marcus Cole’s private mercenaries shifted their stances near the broken terrace doors. The atmosphere in the grand dining hall was a powder keg waiting for a single stray spark to detonate.

“Mr. Cole, step back from the federal evidence,” the lead agent commanded, his hand resting firmly on his weapon. “This is an active criminal seizure under our jurisdiction. Your private security has no authority here.”

Marcus smiled, a humorless, predatory expression, and raised his hands slowly in mock surrender.

“Relax, officer,” Marcus drawled, his eyes lingering on Elena. “I’m just the delivery boy for the final piece of the puzzle. The real shocker isn't what’s in that folder.”

Marcus reached into his inner coat pocket and pulled out a heavy, vintage brass key, placing it gently on top of the federal file.

“It’s what’s locked inside the main vault beneath this very house,” Marcus added softly.

Julian suddenly stopped breathing, his eyes widening in stark, unmasked terror as he stared at the brass key.
