Chapter 12

The shrill, rhythmic beeping from the back of the underground vault cut through the hum of the cooling fans like a knife. The tactical commander instantly pivoted away from Elena, raising his assault rifle as he rushed toward the primary server rack.

“Report!” the commander barked into his comms unit, his voice spiked with sudden urgency. “Status on the mainframe firewall?”

A muffled, panicked voice crackled back through the earpiece. “Commander, we didn't trigger the alarm. Someone is remotely overriding the encryption protocol from an external terminal. They’re downloading the entire database in real-time!”

Elena followed the tactical team into the narrow aisle between the towering server cabinets, her eyes scanning the glowing blue diagnostic lights.

“It’s not an external hack,” Elena said, her voice dropping into a cold realization as she stared at the flashing terminal interface. “The routing address... it’s pinging from the main dining room upstairs.”

The commander froze, turning his helmeted head sharply toward her. “Who is upstairs? Your brother is in custody, and your grandmother can barely walk without her cane.”

Elena shook her head, a cold sweat breaking out across the back of her neck. “Julian’s phone... the call he received right before dinner started. He didn't hang up when he dropped it on the table. The line was open to someone who had direct access to the private intranet bridge.”

The tactical commander cursed loudly, tapping his forearm keypad to lock down the local network.

“Cut the main power grid to the estate immediately!” the commander shouted into his comms. “Isolate the internal routers before the transfer completes!”

Too late. The flashing red lights on the server rack suddenly shifted to a solid, triumphant green, accompanied by a soft, melodic chime indicating the data download was complete. On the primary monitor screen, a single text file opened automatically, displaying a message written in bold, unyielding font: “Thank you for opening the vault, Elena. The debt is finally settled.”

Elena stared at the screen, her heart dropping into her stomach as she recognized the cryptographic signature at the bottom of the file. It wasn't Marcus Cole, and it wasn't a federal oversight board. It was someone they had all assumed was dead for over twenty years.

“Father,” Elena whispered, the word tasting like ash in her mouth.

The commander grabbed her arm firmly, pulling her back toward the stairwell as emergency klaxons began to wail throughout the subterranean bunker.

“Get out of the vault, Ms. Vance!” the commander ordered, his calm facade completely shattered. “The entire perimeter is being compromised!”
