Chapter 5

The sharp chime of the federal agent’s badge hitting the quiet air of the dining room seemed to freeze time itself. Julian stood paralyzed, his arm half-extended in a desperate, aborted motion to stop his sister. Evelyn closed her eyes for a brief, heavy second, accepting the inevitable collapse of the empire she had spent fifty years shielding from the public eye.
“I am Elena Vance,” she said, her voice steady and clear, carrying easily across the cavernous room. She walked past Julian, whose shoulders were now visibly slumped in defeat, and approached the lead agent.
The agent glanced at the pearl cufflink in her palm before looking down at the official tablet in his hands, tapping the screen to confirm the cryptographic hash.
“We have a federal warrant issued out of the Southern District for the seizure of unregistered digital assets tied to the Vance-Miller embezzlement scheme,” the agent stated formally.
Julian finally found his voice, a ragged, desperate sound tearing from his throat as he lunged forward, ignoring the marshals entirely.
“You can’t do this!” Julian shouted, his face contorting with rage. “This is a private family matter! We control the municipal bonds! We built this city!”
The two marshals stepped smoothly into his path, their movements practiced and efficient, pinning Julian’s arms behind his back with practiced restraint. The expensive black tuxedo fabric tore slightly under the pressure, a fitting metaphor for the unraveling of his carefully curated life.
“Mr. Vance, anything you say can and will be used against you in a court of law,” the agent recited calmly, pulling a pair of steel handcuffs from his belt.
Evelyn watched her son being restrained, her expression hardening into a mask of pure aristocratic disdain. She rose slowly from her chair, her silk skirt rustling softly against the floorboards as she faced the federal officer with icy dignity.
“If you touch my grandson again, officer, you will find your career terminated before the sun rises,” Evelyn warned, her voice devoid of panic, loaded with the quiet menace of old, entrenched power.
The lead agent didn't flinch, merely gesturing to the second marshal to secure the perimeter of the dining area.

“With all due respect, Mrs. Vance, your family’s jurisdiction ended the moment those funds hit the offshore accounts,” the agent replied, turning his attention back to Elena.
Elena handed the micro-sd cufflink over to the agent, watching as he slid it into an evidence bag. As the small plastic pouch was sealed, the heavy bronze doors at the end of the hall began to shudder under the weight of multiple heavy footsteps approaching from the private gardens outside.
