Chapter 3

The executive boardroom on the forty-second floor of Vance Enterprises was bathed in the harsh, fluorescent glare of midday. Around the massive mahogany table sat the senior partners, men and women who had nodded deferentially at Julian’s every command for the past decade. Today, they sat in chilling silence, their gazes fixed on the documents spread before them. At the head of the table sat Eleanor Vance—composed, elegant, and wearing a crisp white pantsuit that commanded absolute authority.
When the heavy oak doors swung open, every head turned. Julian stood in the doorway, his tie loosened, his hair slightly disheveled from his frantic ride down the freight elevator and up the corporate tower. He looked less like a corporate titan and more like a man who had just survived a shipwreck.
"Eleanor," Julian said, his voice carrying a desperate edge that he tried hard to mask with artificial anger. "What is the meaning of this coup? You’ve got half-baked legal interns running my company into the ground while you play corporate chess!"
Eleanor did not flinch. She picked up a silver fountain pen, tapping it lightly against the polished wood before setting it down. "Sit down, Julian. Standing makes you look hysterical, and hysterics don't play well on the earnings call we’re conducting in twenty minutes."
"I am the founder of this company!" Julian shouted, taking two rapid steps into the room. Several board members flinched, but Eleanor remained entirely unfazed. She raised a single, perfectly manicured hand.
"You were the founder, Julian. Past tense," Eleanor said, her voice smooth and devoid of malice, which made it infinitely more terrifying. "You founded the company with capital provided by my family trust ten years ago. When we restructured last year to avoid SEC scrutiny, you signed over voting rights to protect your personal liability during the federal investigation into your offshore logistics. Did you honestly think we wouldn't use those voting rights when your reckless spending threatened to bankrupt the entire enterprise?"
Julian gripped the back of an empty chair, his knuckles turning white. "The investigation was cleared! I fixed those shipping logs!"
"You swept them under the rug," Clara’s voice echoed softly from the corner of the room.
Julian spun around. Clara had entered through the executive antechamber, having arrived via the private express elevator just moments before him. She had removed the light blue slip dress, now wearing a sharp charcoal blazer over a black silk blouse. The diamond necklace still rested against her throat, catching the light like a brand of ownership. She carried a thick leather portfolio, which she placed gently on the table next to Eleanor.
"You," Julian spat, pointing a trembling finger at her. "You’re just a fixture. A guest in my house. You have no business being in this boardroom."

"I am the legal consultant who drafted the asset transfer you ignored," Clara replied, pulling out a chair and sitting down directly opposite him. "My name is Clara Vance. Eleanor is my sister. You married her for her name, Julian, and you kept me around as your administrative assistant because you thought we were both too timid to ever check the fine print."
The room fell into a dead, suffocating silence. Julian looked from Clara to Eleanor, the horrifying truth settling over him like wet cement. The woman he had insulted, degraded, and ordered around like a maid just thirty minutes ago was actually the architect of his financial destruction.
