Chapter 2

The blood drained from Julian’s face, leaving his skin the color of wet chalk. He stared at Mrs. Gable, his mind frantically rewinding through the blur of champagne, board meetings, and hurried document signings that had defined the previous quarter. The Vance-Sterling merger had required dozens of signatures, legal exemptions, asset transfers, and collateral agreements. Julian had trusted his legal team implicitly, signing wherever a bright yellow sticky note pointed.
"What are you talking about?" Julian whispered, his voice losing its thunderous edge, replaced by a cold, hollow dread. "Eleanor’s signature was on the primary acquisition documents. She signed as my spouse and co-founder."
Mrs. Gable shook her head slowly, her hands smoothing down the fabric of her black blazer. "She signed the corporate restructuring papers, sir. But the residential deed, the offshore accounts, and the primary equity stakes in Vance Enterprises were transferred out of your name during the quiet period six months ago. Mrs. Vance used the power of attorney you granted her when you were hospitalized for exhaustion last year. You told her to handle your affairs so you could focus on the stock launch."
Julian staggered backward, his hip hitting the edge of the mahogany console table. A crystal vase tipped over, shattering quietly against the rug, but neither of them paid it any attention. The legal implications hit him with the force of a freight train. If Eleanor held the primary equity and the residential deeds, then Clara—who Julian had dismissed as a mere decorative girlfriend picked up after the separation—wasn’t just leaving a wealthy man’s apartment. She was walking away with the keys to his entire kingdom.
"That's impossible," Julian muttered, shaking his head in frantic denial. "My lawyers would have caught it. Sterling would have warned me."
"Mr. Sterling was at the dinner party last night, sir," Mrs. Gable reminded him gently. "He tried to pull you aside, but you told him to talk to your financial secretary instead. The secretary, by the way, resigned this morning and flew to Zurich."
Julian stared at her, the pieces clicking together with terrifying precision. The quiet months, Eleanor’s sudden compliance with his demands for a divorce, the way Clara had moved into the guest wing without complaint—it had all been a trap. They hadn’t been fighting back because they were waiting for the precise legal moment to pull the rug out from under him.
"Where is Eleanor now?" Julian demanded, grabbing his phone from his pocket with shaking fingers.

"She’s at the main office," Mrs. Gable said calmly, walking over to pick up a stray piece of broken glass. "The emergency board meeting started ten minutes ago. You’ve been unseated as CEO, Mr. Vance. The security codes for this penthouse were changed at noon. Technically, you’re the guest here now."
Julian stared at his phone screen. His banking app displayed a string of zeros across every personal and corporate account. The credit cards in his wallet were already declined. He looked down at his expensive dark blue suit, suddenly feeling like a beggar dressed in borrowed royal robes. He looked toward the private elevator, wishing he had stopped Clara when he had the chance, though he knew deep down that stopping her would have changed nothing. The game was already over, and he had lost before he even realized he was playing.
