The waiter arrived, serving a quiet, elegant dinner of roasted duck and root vegetables, accompanied by a rich red wine that Julian recognized as an old favorite from their travels in Napa Valley years ago. They spoke easily throughout the meal, sharing stories of the past months—Julian’s accounts of managing dock workers and troubleshooting software glitches in Brooklyn, Eleanor’s stories of navigating hostile boardrooms with new ethical guidelines, and Clara’s reflections on the international expansion of their supply chain network.
As the dessert plates were cleared away, Eleanor reached into her leather handbag and pulled out a small velvet box, placing it neatly in the center of the table.
Julian looked at the box, recognizing the shape immediately. It was the housing for the diamond necklace Clara had worn on the day she left the penthouse—the very necklace that had caught the cold light while he hurled insults at her in the foyer.
"What is this?" Julian asked, hesitating to reach for it.
