THE DIAMOND NOOSE / Chapter 1 / 14

Chapter 1

The marble foyer of the penthouse smelled faintly of expensive cedar and bitter regret. Julian stood with his shoulders rigid beneath the sharp fabric of his dark blue suit, his jaw working as he tried to swallow the bile of wounded pride. He stared at Clara, whose long red hair cascaded over the delicate straps of her light blue slip dress. The diamond necklace at her throat caught the cold evening light streaming through the floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking Manhattan, flashing like tiny, indifferent stars. Clara did not blink. Her breathing remained shallow and measured, a stark contrast to Julian’s ragged chest movements.

Julian’s outburst still hung in the heavy air. His cruel words about her status had been meant to crush her, to reduce her to a servant within the very walls she had helped him build. Instead, Clara’s lips had curved into that unsettling, serene smile. Her response had been infuriatingly submissive on the surface, yet loaded with a strange, heavy finality. Now, as the rolling pink suitcase clicked against the Italian marble, the sound felt like a starting pistol in a race Julian suddenly realized he was losing.

Behind them, Mrs. Gable stood frozen near the arched doorway. The older woman’s hands remained clamped over her mouth, her knuckles white beneath the black blazer she wore as the head housekeeper. Mrs. Gable had witnessed the slow poisoning of this marriage for five agonizing years, watching Julian’s corporate ambitions curdle into arrogance and cruelty. But she had never seen Clara push back without raising her voice.

"Where do you think you’re going with that luggage?" Julian barked, taking a sharp step forward, his voice cracking with sudden panic despite his attempt at authority.

Clara stopped her slow pivot toward the elevators. She turned her head just enough to meet his frantic gaze. Her eyes were clear, devoid of the tears he secretly craved to see.

"I don’t live here anymore," Clara said softly, her voice carrying an eerie weight that silenced the sprawling apartment. "And neither does your wife."

With that, she turned back around, her heels clicking steadily against the floor. The elevator doors slid open instantly, as if summoned by fate itself. She stepped inside, pulling the pink suitcase behind her. The doors closed smoothly, sealing away the wreckage of a billion-dollar empire built on sand. Julian lunged forward, slamming his palm against the closed metal doors, but they remained firmly shut. Mrs. Gable slowly lowered her hands, her eyes filled with a terrifying realization. Julian spun around to face her, his chest heaving.

"What does she mean by that, Mrs. Gable? Where is Eleanor?" Julian demanded, grabbing at the lapels of his suit jacket.

Mrs. Gable took a cautious step backward, her voice trembling but steady. "Mr. Vance, Mrs. Vance hasn't been the legal owner of this home for over three months. Didn’t you read the papers you signed after the merger?"

Julian froze. The silence that followed was absolute, broken only by the distant hum of city traffic far below.
