Chapter 8 - The Digital Confession

The green light of the safe illuminated Elena’s face in the dark, narrow confines of the walk-in closet. Her fingers hovered over the velvet tray before she carefully reached in and picked up the silver keycard. Beside it, the small, unmarked USB drive caught the dim light, pulsing with a quiet, ominous potential. Mia leaned in closer, her small breath fogging slightly in the cool air of the closet.

"Is that... is that the evidence?" Mia whispered, her voice barely audible over the faint hum of the house's ventilation system.

"I don't know yet," Elena replied, her voice steady despite the adrenaline hammering against her ribs. She slipped the keycard into her pocket and picked up the USB drive, turning the small piece of plastic over in her hand. "There’s only one way to find out."

Suddenly, a sharp, double flash of light filtered through the second-floor windows from the porch below.

Arthur’s signal. Someone was pulling into the driveway.

"Mom!" Mia grabbed Elena’s sleeve, her eyes wide with sudden terror. "Someone's here!"

"Stay calm," Elena whispered sharply, slipping the USB drive safely into her coat pocket alongside the keycard. She pushed the heavy metal door of the safe shut until it clicked and pulled the wooden false panel back into place, aligning the seams so perfectly that it looked completely undisturbed. "Take my hand, Mia. We're going down the back stairs."

Navigating the service staircase in the dark required absolute silence. The old wooden steps creaked underfoot, each sound feeling like a gunshot in the quiet house. When they reached the bottom landing, the front doorbell rang—a loud, demanding chime that echoed through the entire lower floor.

Arthur appeared at the end of the hallway, his face pale and slick with sweat. He rushed over to them, his breathing shallow and rapid. "It’s Clara," Arthur hissed under his breath. "She came back with a private investigator and a locksmith. They're trying to force the front door open right now!"

"How much time do we have?" Elena demanded, keeping her grip firm on Mia’s hand.

"Maybe sixty seconds before the locksmith gets the deadbolt picked," Arthur replied, casting a frantic glance toward the front entryway. "If they catch you here with Julian's safe contents, they'll claim you were breaking and entering, and the police will arrest you instead of him!"

Elena didn't hesitate. She looked toward the side kitchen door that led directly out to the detached garage and the overgrown backyard garden. "We go out through the garage. Arthur, go meet them at the front door. Act natural. Pretend you're just picking up some forgotten documents for the firm."

"Are you insane?" Arthur whispered, his eyes widening in panic. "Clara knows I work with Julian! She'll see right through me!"

"Then improvise," Elena said coldly. "You wanted out of this mess, Arthur. This is your price of admission."

Without waiting for his response, Elena pulled Mia toward the kitchen, slipping through the side door just as the loud, sharp sound of metal grinding against metal echoed from the front entrance. The locksmith was burning through the deadbolt.

The garage was cool and smelled of gasoline and old tires. Elena navigated through the shadows toward the side exit leading to the alleyway behind the property. As she unlatched the heavy wooden gate of the fence, a pair of headlights swept across the alley, blinding them momentarily. A sleek black sedan was idling twenty feet away, its engine humming quietly in the night.

The rear passenger door swung open automatically, and a man in a dark trench coat stepped out into the dim amber light of the streetlamp, blocking their path to freedom.
