Chapter 6 - The Weight of the Ledger

The kitchen light flickered once before settling into a steady, sterile glow. Arthur sat at the polished granite island, his fingers nervously tracing the rim of an empty glass of water Elena had offered him. The thick stack of international bank statements lay spread across the counter between them, a sprawling web of offshore accounts, fraudulent signatures, and multi-million-dollar transfers that painted a terrifying picture of corporate crime. Mia sat on the opposite stool, her small legs swinging slightly as she watched the adults with wide, unblinking eyes.

"You knew about this the entire time?" Elena asked, her voice dangerously calm as she stared down at a document bearing her own forged signature from eighteen months ago.

"I knew Julian was moving money, yes," Arthur admitted, avoiding her gaze and staring intently at the granite surface. "I didn't know the extent of it until he had you committed. The day you disappeared, Julian came into the office smelling of rubbing alcohol and panic. He told me you had a mental breakdown and signed over power of attorney voluntarily. But I saw the notary stamp on the document—it was dated three days after you were already locked inside the facility."

Elena crossed her arms tightly over her chest, feeling a cold knot twist in her stomach. "And you said nothing. You stayed silent for over a year while I was trapped in that room taking medication I didn't need, surrounded by people who wouldn't even let me look out a window."

"I have a family, Elena," Arthur said defensively, finally looking up with a flash of desperate fear in his eyes. "Julian made it very clear what happens to people who ask too many questions. He has powerful friends in the district attorney's office. He practically bought half the local councilmen with campaign donations funneled through dummy accounts."

"Well, his powerful friends didn't save him from being hauled out of his own wedding in handcuffs today, did they?" Elena retorted sharply.

"Arresting him for domestic fraud is just the tip of the iceberg," Arthur warned, leaning forward and tapping a finger against one of the international statements. "If the federal investigators trace these offshore deposits before we can secure the primary ledger, they won't just freeze Julian’s assets—they’ll freeze yours, too. Because legally, your name is still attached to the primary corporate entity holding the properties."

Mia slid off her stool, walking quietly over to her mother and tugging on the hem of her sweater. "Mom, what does 'seize everything' mean? Are we going to have to leave this house again?"

Elena knelt down, placing her hands gently on Mia’s shoulders, forcing a reassuring smile onto her face even though her heart was pounding against her ribs. "No, sweetie. We aren't going anywhere. Your dad made a mess, but we are going to fix it." She looked back up at Arthur. "Where is the primary physical ledger, Arthur? The one with the real signatures and the untampered audit trails?"

Arthur hesitated, his jaw tightening as he weighed the risk of answering. "It’s not in the office. And it’s not in Julian's safe here." He paused, swallowing hard. "It’s hidden in the safety deposit box at the downtown branch of the First National Bank. And the only way to open it requires a biometric scan... or Julian’s physical keycard."
