Chapter 7 - The Keycard in the Safe

The grandfather clock in the hallway chimed heavily, striking eight o'clock in the evening. The sound vibrated through the quiet house, heightening the tension that hung like a thick fog between Elena, Arthur, and young Mia. Arthur stood up from the kitchen island, nervously smoothing down the front of his rumpled charcoal suit.

"If Julian hasn't made bail by midnight, his lawyers will try to file an emergency writ to access his personal effects," Arthur said, pacing slowly across the tile floor. "If they get to that safety deposit box first, every document proving your innocence—and every piece of evidence linking him to the embezzlement—will vanish into an incinerator before the federal investigators even know what they're looking for."

Elena crossed the room and picked up her trench coat from the sofa. "Then we don't have until midnight. We need that keycard now."

Arthur stopped pacing and stared at her in disbelief. "Are you out of your mind? Julian's personal safe is upstairs in the master bedroom behind the false panel in the walk-in closet. It requires a six-digit code and a retinal scan. Even if we could somehow get into the house undetected—which we can't, since Clara probably called a locksmith by now—we can't open that safe without Julian."

"Who said anything about needing Julian to open it?" Elena asked, her eyes narrowing with cold resolve as she walked toward the stairs.

Mia followed close behind her mother, her small footsteps echoing softly. "Mom, what are you going to do?"

"Your father always had a terrible habit of writing down his security hints," Elena said, pausing at the bottom of the staircase and looking back at Arthur. "He thought he was the smartest man in any room, so he never believed anyone else was smart enough to notice his patterns. Arthur, wait by the front window. If anyone pulls into the driveway—police, Clara, or one of Julian’s associates—flash the porch light twice."

Arthur stood frozen for a moment before nodding slowly, realizing he was already too deep into the conspiracy to turn back.

Elena and Mia climbed the stairs in the dim light, navigating the unfamiliar hallway that Clara had redecorated. When they reached the master bedroom, the atmosphere felt heavy, saturated with the ghost of Julian’s presence. The walk-in closet smelled faintly of his cologne and fresh cedar. Elena pushed aside the rows of expensive suits and tailored shirts until she found the false wood-paneled wall at the very back.

She pressed her fingers along the edge of the panel, feeling for the hidden latch Julian had installed years ago when they first bought the house—back when they were a real family, before the greed took over. With a soft click, the panel swung inward, revealing a heavy metal digital safe embedded deep into the drywall.

Mia pointed a trembling finger at the keypad. "Mom... the code. Do you remember it?"

Elena didn't hesitate. She typed in a sequence of numbers based on the day Mia was born, followed by the anniversary of the day they first met. The digital screen flashed red, indicating an error.

"Damn it," Elena whispered under her breath.

"Wait," Mia said softly, stepping closer to the safe. "Dad didn't use our birthdays anymore after... after he changed. Remember what he said when he got his big promotion last year? He said everything changed when he started his 'new life'."

Elena paused, her fingers hovering over the keypad. She typed a new six-digit sequence—the date of the exact day she had been admitted to the psychiatric facility.

The small screen flashed green with a cheerful beep, and the heavy metal door of the safe clicked open.
