Chapter 3 - Sirens in the Distance

The faint, rising wail of police sirens pierced the quiet afternoon air outside the chapel windows, growing louder with every passing second. The sound acted like an electric shock through the congregation, causing several guests in the back rows to grab their coats and begin sliding out of the pews toward the side exits. Clara looked wildly around the room, realizing her dream wedding was disintegrating into a public spectacle of catastrophic proportions. Her carefully cultivated social standing, her future security, and her spotless reputation were evaporating before her eyes.
"This is a mistake, a complete misunderstanding," Clara insisted, her voice tight and trembling with suppressed fury as she glared at Elena. "Julian, tell them. Tell everyone this woman is unstable. You showed me the medical records yourself!"
Julian didn't answer. He stood frozen by the altar, staring at the heavy wooden doors as red and blue flashing lights began to paint shifting patterns of light across the stained glass windows. The illusion of control he had meticulously maintained for over a year had completely shattered. He looked from Clara to Elena, and finally down at Mia, who refused to meet his eyes, instead staring intently at the fallen white bouquet on the floor.
"You showed her my medical records?" Elena asked, her voice dropping to a dangerous, icy register. She stepped closer to Julian, forcing him to take an involuntary step backward. "You gave my private psychiatric evaluations to a woman you were planning to marry while I was still locked in a facility three states away? Did you also tell her how you arranged the 'accident' that put me there in the first place?"
Aunt Helen gasped, covering her mouth with her hand, while a murmur of intense shock swept through the remaining guests.
"Elena, stop it," Julian hissed, lunging forward to grab her wrists, but Elena was faster. She sidestepped him with practiced ease, her eyes blazing with a fierce, vindictive determination.
"You wanted a fresh start, Julian?" Elena challenged, stepping back up to the altar and looking directly at the gathered crowd. "You wanted my house, my bank accounts, my daughter, and my life? Well, you forgot one very important detail. Dead people don't stay quiet forever when they never actually signed away their rights."
The heavy chapel doors pushed open once more, and two uniformed police officers stepped inside, their raincoats glistening under the overhead lights. The lead officer scanned the room, his eyes instantly locking onto Julian, who stood rigidly by the altar with his hands half-raised in a defensive posture.
"Julian Vance?" the officer called out, his hand resting casually on the utility belt at his waist. "We received a tip regarding a fraudulent estate transfer and a falsified missing persons report. We need you to come with us downtown for questioning."
Clara took a sharp breath, shaking her head in utter disbelief. "No, wait, there's been a mistake, he's a respected businessman—"

"Quiet, Clara," Julian snapped, his voice suddenly hard and venomous, stripping away the charming facade he had worn for the past year. He turned his cold gaze toward the officer and slowly lowered his hands. "I'm not going anywhere without my lawyer."
