Chapter 2 - The Ghost in the Doorway

The heavy oak doors of the chapel swung completely open, letting in a sharp gust of cold autumn air that rattled the delicate white flowers in Mia's bouquet. The congregation rose to their feet in a synchronized wave of shock, gasping audibly as they stared at the woman standing in the threshold. Her dark hair was damp, clinging to her cheeks, and her trench coat was splattered with mud, but there was no mistaking the striking, familiar features. It was Elena. Julian's color drained entirely, leaving his face the shade of bleached chalk. His grip on Mia's shoulder slackened instantly, his arm trembling violently as he stared across the empty pews.
"Elena..." Julian whispered, the word escaping his lips like a breath of trapped air. "That's impossible. We buried... we held a service."
Elena stepped forward into the aisle, her boots clicking sharply against the polished wooden floor. She didn't look at the trembling groom, nor did she acknowledge Clara, who had frozen in place with her mouth slightly open. Elena’s eyes locked entirely onto her daughter. A bittersweet, trembling smile touched the corners of Elena’s lips as she reached out a shaking hand.
"You didn't bury me, Julian," Elena said, her voice echoing clearly off the vaulted ceiling. "You just made sure nobody knew where to look when you locked me away."
Clara took a hurried step back, her white dress rustling like dry autumn leaves. "Julian, what is the meaning of this? Who is this person? Security! Someone please remove her from the building immediately!"
Not a single guest moved. Aunt Helen remained glued to her seat, clutching her pearl necklace so tightly the string threatened to snap under the pressure. The tension in the room was suffocating, thick enough to taste. Julian tried to step in front of Clara, raising a hand defensively.
"Elena, you shouldn't be here," Julian said, his voice cracking slightly as he fought to regain his composure. "Whatever you think you know, whatever delusions you've been living with while you were gone, this isn't the place to air them out. We can talk about this privately."
"Privately?" Elena laughed, a dry, humorless sound that sent a shiver down the spine of everyone present. She tapped the heavy manila folder clutched against her chest. "Is that what you called the isolation room in the clinic? Private? Or was it private when you forged my signature on the property transfer deeds the very same week you declared me legally incompetent?"
Mia looked up at her father, her earlier anger instantly replaced by a crushing, profound betrayal. The white flower bouquet slipped from her trembling fingers, hitting the floor with a soft thud.
"You lied to me," Mia whispered, backing away from Julian. "You told me she left us because she didn't love us anymore."
Julian reached out desperately, his eyes wide with frantic pleading. "Mia, listen to me, your mother is sick, she doesn't know what she's saying—"

"I know exactly what I'm saying," Elena interrupted, stepping directly between Julian and his terrified daughter. She opened the manila folder, pulled out a crisp, signed legal document, and held it up for the entire chapel to see. "And the police are already outside."
