Chapter 8

The morning sun filtered gray and weak through the heavy cabin windows, casting long shadows across the wooden floor. Clara stood in front of the small bathroom mirror, her dark hair tied back tightly into a utilitarian bun, wearing her sturdy hiking boots, durable cargo pants, and the maroon cardigan zipped up to her chin. The transformation from suburban mother to operative was jarring, yet necessary.

In the living room, David was meticulously inspecting a pair of encrypted satellite communicators and packing a ruggedized tactical backpack with emergency supplies, zip ties, and a portable battery jumper.

"Toby can't stay here while we go," Clara said as she walked out of the bathroom, her voice carrying an absolute, non-negotiable tone.

David looked up from the backpack, frowning slightly. "Clara, bringing an infant into an extraction zone is insane. This isn't a negotiation."

"It's not a suggestion either," Clara shot back, stepping into his personal space with an intensity that caught him completely off guard. "I am not leaving my son in an isolated cabin in the woods where Vanguard's recovery teams can easily track us down once they realize we slipped their net. We take him with us, or I go alone."

David stared at her for a long, tense moment, measuring her resolve. He saw no fear in her dark eyes—only a fierce, unbreakable maternal protection that brooked no argument. He let out a sharp breath, running a hand through his short brown hair.

"Fine," David conceded reluctantly. "We use the secondary transport—an old unmarked utility van parked in the shed out back. It has a Faraday cage built into the rear compartment to block all outgoing and incoming electronic tracking signals."

Within twenty minutes, the old white utility van was loaded and rolling quietly down the gravel lane, its headlights off until they reached the main paved highway heading west toward Chicago. Toby slept peacefully in his car seat secured in the middle row, completely unaware that his parents were caught in the crosshairs of a multi-billion-dollar corporate conspiracy.

As the miles ticked away on the odometer, Clara checked the straps on her backpack, her mind racing with a singular focus: find Mark, expose Vanguard, and bring her family back together.
