Chapter 12

The elevator ride to the executive penthouse level of the Vanguard Defense building was completely silent, broken only by the digital floor numbers ticking upward in glowing green LEDs. Clara stood shoulder-to-shoulder with David, both of them wearing the security vests they had stripped from the guards downstairs, their faces illuminated by the pale light of the elevator cabin.
The doors chimed softly and slid open to reveal a sprawling, minimalist penthouse office suite polished to a mirror-like sheen. Floor-to-ceiling windows offered a panoramic view of the rain-drenched Chicago skyline, while modern leather furniture and abstract art pieces filled the expansive space.
At the far end of the room, behind a massive glass desk, sat a middle-aged man in an impeccably tailored charcoal suit. Two armed security guards stood on either side of a second chair where a battered, exhausted Mark Vance was tied securely with heavy plastic zip ties.
Mark's blue button-up shirt was torn at the collar, and a dark bruise bloomed across his left cheekbone. His eyes were wide with shock and exhaustion as the elevator doors opened to reveal his wife standing calmly in the doorway alongside a total stranger.
"Clara?" Mark croaked, his voice raw and disbelieving. "What... what are you doing here? How did you get past perimeter security?"
The executive in the charcoal suit—a man named Director Sterling—stood up slowly from his leather chair, a cold, predatory smile playing across his lips. He didn't look panicked; instead, he looked like a man who enjoyed watching a well-rehearsed play reach its final act.
"Well, well," Sterling murmured, smoothing the lapels of his suit jacket. "The stray puppy finally wandered back into the pound. We spent all afternoon looking for that tracking device in your stroller, Mrs. Vance. Imagine our surprise when you managed to slip right through our dragnet."

David stepped smoothly out in front of Clara, his right hand resting casually near his waistband where a confiscated sidearm was tucked safely away. "The game's over, Sterling. We downloaded the entire master manifest of your illegal tracking operations onto an external encrypted server. The data is already syncing to three separate international news agencies and federal oversight boards."
Sterling’s smile faltered for a fraction of a second, the first sign of genuine panic flickering behind his calculating eyes.
