Chapter 5

The safe house smelled faintly of old cedarwood and gun oil, a stark contrast to the bright, chaotic energy of the farmer's market. Located down a quiet gravel lane on the outskirts of the city, the small single-story cabin was entirely invisible from the main road. David unlocked the heavy oak front door, ushered Clara and the sleeping baby inside, and immediately engaged three separate deadbolts before drawing the heavy blackout curtains across the front windows.
Clara gently laid Toby down on a neatly made twin bed in the back bedroom, smoothing his soft blanket before walking back out to the main living area. David was standing by a small oak kitchen counter, methodically stripping down a compact laptop and connecting it to a secure satellite router.
"Make yourself comfortable, Clara. We're safe here for at least twelve hours," David said without looking up from his screen.
Clara crossed her arms over her maroon cardigan, shivering despite the warmth inside the cabin. "You have a safe house stocked with encrypted tech and deadbolts. You're not just a local contractor, David. Who are you working for? Or better yet, who are you hiding from?"
David paused his typing, letting out a long, measured sigh. He turned around, leaning back against the counter, his expression tired and worn. "I used to work for a private intelligence firm specializing in corporate security and asset retrieval. Three months ago, my team discovered that a massive defense contractor was systematically embedding illegal surveillance chips into civilian consumer products—specifically high-end baby gear distributed through international supply chains."
Clara’s eyes widened in horror. "Baby gear? Why would a defense contractor track baby strollers?"
"Because high-end strollers travel everywhere," David explained grimly. "Parks, government offices, international airports, secure residential compounds where security cameras miss strollers because they look harmless. It's the ultimate Trojan horse for corporate and political espionage. And your husband, Mark, was brought in to audit their logistics warehouse in Chicago last week."

The room seemed to spin around Clara as the terrifying puzzle pieces snapped into sharp focus. Mark hadn't just been auditing inventory numbers; he must have stumbled upon the shipping manifests detailing the illegal tracking devices. And when the corporation realized Mark was getting too close to the truth, they targeted his family to keep him silent.
"Mark," Clara gasped, her hand flying to her mouth. "If they're tracking me here, they already have him in Chicago."
