Chapter 10

The descent into the old municipal steam tunnels was like dropping into another century. Condensation dripped rhythmically from overhead cast-iron pipes, creating a hollow, echoing sound that amplified every footstep. The air tasted of copper, damp earth, and decades of industrial neglect. Clara kept her flashlight beam low, guiding her boots across the slick concrete floor while David led the way with a handheld digital schematic.

"We're directly underneath the facility's perimeter fence now," David whispered over the constant hiss of distant steam valves. "Fifty yards ahead, there's a maintenance hatch that leads up into the lower archives of Vanguard's data center. That's where Mark's audit logs should be stored on an isolated physical server."

Clara followed closely behind him, her muscles tense and hyper-aware of every sound echoing through the subterranean labyrinth. Her mind flashed briefly back to the farmer's market—the barking dog, the smoking electronic device, the terror of nearly losing Toby. That terror had transformed into cold, sharp clarity. She was no longer just a victim running for her life; she was an active participant in dismantling the machine that tried to destroy her family.

Suddenly, David held up a closed fist, signaling her to freeze.

Clara stopped instantly, holding her breath. Up ahead, near the base of the vertical ladder leading to the maintenance hatch, a pair of heavy rubber boots stepped into view.

"Check sector four again," a gruff voice echoed down the tunnel. "Security algorithms flagged a minor atmospheric pressure fluctuation near the lower vents. Could just be a steam leak, but corporate wants zero anomalies tonight."

"All clear on my end," a second voice replied, the sound of boots scraping against the concrete getting closer to their position.

David glanced back at Clara, his eyes narrowing in calculation. He reached slowly behind his back, his fingers hooking around the handle of a heavy industrial wrench clipped to his belt. Clara didn't hesitate. Drawing upon an inner reservoir of strength she never knew she possessed, she slipped past David, stepping silently out of the shadow of a large junction box just as the first guard rounded the concrete pillar.
