Chapter 9 - The Vault Beneath the Floor

The firefighter’s announcement cut through the cacophony of sirens and crackling radio static like a beacon of hope. Clara stood up abruptly, brushing the grey ash from her trousers, her eyes locked on the smoking crater of the east wing. The lead inspector immediately signaled two of his officers to follow the firefighter toward the newly exposed cellar entrance near the edge of the rubble.

Elena scrambled to her feet, still holding little Toby tightly by the hand. Desperation flickered back into her tear-stained eyes. "The north cellar," she breathed, her voice trembling. "That wasn't part of the demolition zone. That’s where the secondary records were kept."

The inspector shot her a stern warning glance. "Stay right here, Ms. Vance. You aren't going anywhere."

Clara didn't wait for permission. She turned and followed the firefighter and the officers down a steep, rubble-strewn concrete ramp that led into the damp, subterranean depths of the housing complex. The air down here was thick with the smell of damp earth, old paper, and sulfur from the blast. Flashlights cut through the heavy darkness, casting long, dancing shadows against the crumbling stone walls.

At the far end of the cellar, half-buried under a pile of fallen drywall, stood a heavy, cast-iron vault door. Its circular combination dial was caked in soot, but the reinforced steel frame appeared miraculously undamaged by the explosion upstairs.

The firefighter stepped back, shining his heavy industrial flashlight directly onto the center of the vault door. "The foundation wall absorbed most of the shockwave," he reported. "The mechanism is intact, but it requires a digital override and a mechanical key to open."

Arthur, who had followed closely behind the group, stepped forward and adjusted his glasses. He looked down at the brass keys clutched tightly in Clara’s hand.

"Clara," Arthur said quietly, pointing toward a small, hexagonal keyhole located just beneath the vault's digital keypad. "Try the small brass key on your ring. The one that came with the office transfer."

Clara’s hands shook as she sorted through the heavy brass ring. She selected the smallest, most intricate key—the one Arthur had handed her just before the chaos began. She stepped up to the massive iron door, her breath echoing in the confined subterranean space. With hesitant precision, she slid the key into the hexagonal slot.

It fit with a smooth, satisfying click.

A collective murmur rippled through the officers standing behind her. But as Clara turned the key a quarter-turn to the right, the vault's digital screen suddenly flared to life with a blinding red glow, emitting a harsh, rhythmic warning beep.

A computerized voice echoed from the vault’s internal speaker system: “SECURITY PROTOCOL ENGAGED. ENTER FOUR-DIGIT BIOMETRIC OVERRIDE CODE OR SYSTEM WILL PURGE DATA.”

Clara froze, her hand still resting on the key. "I don't know any code," she said, turning back to face the group in mounting panic.

From the top of the concrete ramp, a sharp, breathless voice echoed down into the cellar.

"I know it! I know the code!"

Elena stumbled down the ramp, dragging a bewildered Toby behind her, having broken past the junior officer at the perimeter. She stopped a few feet away from the vault, her chest heaving, and pointed a trembling finger at the digital keypad.

"It's not a password," Elena gasped, tears streaming down her face. "It's Toby's birth date combined with the day we moved into the building. 0-6-1-4."

Clara hesitated, looking from Elena to the flashing red screen. With only seconds before the system purged its data forever, she reached out her finger toward the keypad. As she punched in the first digit, the cellar walls groaned ominously, and a fresh cascade of dirt rained down from the ceiling above.
