Chapter 7 - The Barrel of the Ultimatum

The cold steel barrel of the handgun caught the hazy afternoon sunlight, casting a menacing glint across the chaotic street. Clara froze, her foot planted just outside the threshold of the municipal office. The roar of the distant demolition excavator seemed to fade into the background, replaced by the pounding of blood in her ears. Behind her, Arthur shouted a warning, and the remaining officers inside scrambled for their service weapons, but the masked figure stepped closer, pressing the muzzle fractionally nearer to Clara’s chest.

"Don't even think about it," a muffled voice growled from beneath the black ski mask. "Drop the keys, Vance."

Clara’s fingers tightened instinctively around the brass ring of the keys. Her mind raced. These keys were the only things standing between absolute ruin and the truth about the housing complex. If she dropped them, the evidence inside the floor safe—along with Toby’s medical fund and the master documents—would be lost forever beneath the rubble of the collapsing east wing.

Inside the office, little Toby let out a piercing shriek, burying his face in his hands as an officer pulled him behind a heavy filing cabinet for cover. Elena, who was being pushed into the holding vehicle outside, strained against the patrol car door, her eyes widening in horror as she saw the armed figure blocking Clara.

"Don't shoot her!" Elena screamed, her voice cracking with raw panic. "She has nothing to do with the safe!"

The masked assailant ignored Elena entirely, keeping his gaze locked on Clara. "The keys, Clara. Now. Or the next sound you hear won't be a demolition machine."

Clara’s breath hitched. She could feel the chill of the metal doorframe against her shoulder and the blistering heat of the dust-choked wind blowing off the street. She slowly lowered her right hand, pretending to loosen her grip on the brass ring, while her left hand subtly slid into the pocket of her gold satin blouse, her fingers brushing against her phone.

"You're too late anyway," Clara said, keeping her voice remarkably steady despite the terror gripping her chest. "The audit team is already at the municipal board offices. Your bosses are going down whether I reach that safe or not."

The masked man let out a harsh, cynical laugh. "You really think the board is going to protect you? They're the ones who ordered this demolition in the first place."

With a sudden, violent movement, the assailant lunged forward, reaching out his free hand to snatch the keys directly from Clara’s grip. Clara reacted on pure adrenaline. Instead of pulling away, she thrust her hand forward, driving the sharp brass teeth of the keys directly into the attacker's exposed wrist.

The man roared in pain, his grip on the firearm slipping for a fraction of a second. The weapon discharged, the deafening crack of the gunshot shattering the windows of the adjacent storefronts and sending a flock of pigeons scattering into the grey sky.

Before the assailant could recover, a heavy hand grabbed him from behind, spinning him around and slamming him hard against the brick wall. It was the lead inspector, who had slipped out the side exit of the municipal building.

The mask was violently ripped away, revealing the pale, sweating face of the housing board's chief financial officer.

Arthur rushed out of the office doors, gasping for breath, and looked down at the subdued official. But before anyone could speak, a massive explosion rocked the end of the street, and the entire east wing of the housing complex collapsed inward in a towering cloud of smoke and ash.
